Wow, you look like a million bucks!

When players are tactfully asked why they’ve blown a tournament or had so many close calls, they usually respond with something like, “I just have to keep putting myself in contention and giving myself a good shot to win — it’ll happen.” How cliche! Well, depending on your luck, it materializes sooner rather than later.

For Webb Simpson, it came true pretty quickly. (Maybe the golfing gods were looking out for him after they basically screwed him over in New Orleans a few months agothough it was for a good cause.)

Hi, I think I'm going to win...finally!

As you may have noticed, there hasn’t been any new content published on WUP since Tuesday. My bad! I’ve been resting at my parents’ home in Seattle and recovering from post-WGC-major-fatigue disorder — which is a shame since the weather here has been absolutely perfect (high-70s, low-80s, no humidity). Plus, I obviously had to recharge my batteries before THE FEDEX CUP PLAYOFFS!

Arjun Atwal and Tiger Woods are more than just frequent practice buddies at Isleworth — surprise! — but they frequently exchange text messages, too. Since Arjun kicked off the Wyndham Championship with a 9-under on Thursday, Tiger has been sending him messages of encouragement, like, “Well done, bud.”

This line of questioning from Arjun’s post-round presser made me giggle, for some reason:

Arjun Atwal shot a 67 in the final round of the Wyndham Championship for a total of 20-under-par to become the first Monday qualifier in 24 years to win a PGA Tour event. He’s also the first Indian-born player to ever win on tour. But he’s ineligible to compete in the FedEx Cup playoffs that begin this week with The Barclays because he’s not a tour member. He lost his card last month because he hadn’t played well enough when his medical exemption ran out.

Luckily on Sunday Arjun didn’t have the tremendous pressure of trying to improve his position in the FedEx Cup standings — just to win a tournament and make history.

For some players the Wyndham Championship is their last shot at a strong finish to get into the FedEx Cup playoffs. For Ryan Moore, it’s his turn to defend his title at the Wyndham Championship, where he captured his break through victory last season in a three-way playoff. Moore kicked off the PGA Championship with a three-under 69 to find himself on the leaderboard. I spoke with him after his round and the Q&A is posted over at WSJ.com. I also talked with Ryan the other day about his feelings on defending — and the pilot cell phone program that’s in place this week.

Less than three days after John Daly withdrew from the PGA Championship due to a shoulder injury — possibly a torn rotator cuff, according to his Twitter feed — he tweeted that he’d been cleared by his doctor to play in this week’s Wyndham Championship. Turned out his shoulder was “strained,” but on Saturday he said he was day-to-day.

Next month’s Wyndham Championship will serve as the “guinea pig tournament” for fans to bring their cell phones on the course.

Reader L sent in a tip, saying that at a volunteer meeting they were told that the PGA Tour is letting the Wyndham be the pilot tournament for allowing the gallery to have cell phones, and if this works well, the Tour will consider expanding this policy for other tournaments. The Tour did not respond immediately to an email.

Here’s the policy verbatim from the volunteer handbook:
