The USGA announced groupings and starting times for the first two rounds of the 2016 U.S. Open Championship, Thursday (June 16) and Friday (June 17), on Friday. Oakmont Country Club will max out at 7,219 yards as a par-70 (in other words, it’s beastly). The field of 156 players will play the first two rounds before the low 60 scores and ties decide the cut.

The USGA has fun with its pairings in the past, but it seems like it’s backed off a little ever since receiving some backlash a few years ago for the heavyweights group. I mean, okay, maybe that went a tad too far, but no need to ruin the fun for everyone! Still, the USGA definitely has the best groupings out of the four majors.

Tiger, Phil and Bubba together won't create a zoo or anything!

I look forward to the U.S. Open pairings every year and they certainly don’t disappoint this year.  The USGA likes to have fun with the pairings for the first two rounds and it’s transparent about putting together guys with a random commonality and grouping marquee threesomes.

Of course, the two that grabbed my attention the most were: Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson, and Luke Donald, Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood.
