Rory McIlroy entered the WGC-Cadillac Match Play Championship as the no. 1 seed and the no. 1 player in the world. He solidified both positions by beating his opponent in seven straight matches, including Gary Woodland 4&2 in the finals.

McIlroy also headed into the week with the prospect of sitting ringside at what was being hailed as the fight of the century, the Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao showdown, in Las Vegas. He had paid an exorbitant amount of money for his tickets — which he wouldn’t disclose in his pre-tournament press conference — and planned to make the back-and-forth trip regardless of whether he was still in the golf tournament. His position obviously changed on Saturday evening when his match against Paul Casey went into extra holes and McIlroy likely wouldn’t have made it to MGM Grand for the fight in time even if he’d tried.

Bradley Jimenez

Here’s something you hardly ever see in golf: Two players getting into a heated argument and almost coming to blows.

Well, that’s what happened on Friday afternoon at TPC Harding Park between Keegan Bradley and Miguel Angel Jimenez on the 18th hole of their match at the WGC-Cadillac Match Play Championship.

Well, round one of matches at the WGC-Cadillac Match Play Championship is in the books, and boy, that was a lot of golf for a day! I’m still trying to wrap my head around everything that happened, but that’s nearly impossible (and I don’t want to spend all night writing up every single match), so let’s just take a look at the key match-ups and a few of the upsets.

As you’re well aware from your own money games on the golf course, one of the differences the match play format lends is allowing players to concede putts to their opponents. However, the average hacker is likely much more generous with giving putts than a PGA Tour pro is (at least I am). Sometimes pros make opponents putt out a tap-in just because they feel like it or perhaps to get under their opponents’ skin.

Jason Day has a history of being rather stingy when it comes to conceding putts. He kicked off the day of pre-tournament press conferences at the WGC-Cadillac Match Play Championship with some amusing stories of times that he made his opponents angry at him because he didn’t concede very short putts.

The Masters champ during a practice round at TPC Harding Park on Monday

Jordan Spieth kicked off his week at the WGC-Cadillac Match Play Championship in a pretty chill manner on Monday. He took a flight on Monday morning from Dallas to San Francisco, and showed up to the driving range at TPC Harding Park by late morning, where he hit balls in front of about a dozen fans, all of whom had their iPhones in hand as they watched the reigning Masters champion warm up. As he walked to the shuttle for the putting green, he signed a few autographs.

After rolling just a few putts — and exchanging a few words with world no. 1 Rory McIlroy — he hopped on another golf cart to the eighth hole, where he met up with Ryan Palmer and Gary Woodland to play an 11-hole practice round. It was his first look at the course.

As if this week’s WGC-Cadillac Match Play Championship isn’t grueling enough, with the possibility of players competing in up to seven matches at TPC Harding Park. Nonetheless, Rory McIlroy plans to go out of his way to sit ringside for Saturday’s blockbuster fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas.

If McIlroy advances to the semifinals after Saturday’s matches, he will still fly (private, duh) to watch the fight, according to the Daily Mail.

More golf porn: the 18th green at Harding Park

Sunday afternoon’s media outing at TPC Harding Park, hosted by Nike Golf, along with former USGA president Sandy Tatum, was a blast. As always, it’s the company that makes all the difference more often than not. I wasn’t sure what to expect and didn’t know who would be there (believe it or not, I haven’t gone to many of these media outings–have only been doing this for how long? Not very long). I was just happy to be there!
