I’ve been meaning to use this Tony Romo zinger for over a month, or heck, I likely used a version of this in jest back in 2010 or 2012, but it was better that I waited so long after the fact because it works better in this context. Last month, it was announced that Romo, 14-year veteran quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, was officially retiring and joining CBS as the lead game analyst, where he’ll have the pleasure of sharing the booth with lead announcer Jim Nantz.

Eyeing a win after finishing runner-up to Tiger and Phil the last two weeks

Eyeing a win after finishing runner-up to Tiger and Phil the last two weeks

There’s a name that’s been gracing the first page of the leaderboard who is tied for the 54-hole lead: Brandt Snedeker, who finished runner-up the last two weeks to Tiger Woods (Farmers Insurance Open) and Phil Mickelson (Waste Management Phoenix Open), respectively. PGA Tour rookie James Hahn birdied his last three holes at Spyglass (the hardest of the three venues) to fire a six-under 66 and tie Snedeker for the lead at 12-under through 54 holes.

Good news for Snedeker – Mickelson, who triple-bogeyed the 18th at Pebble Beach today after knocking two in the water (if you haven’t seen the GIF of his slip, then here’s a link), made the cut on the number (one-under), so he’s not a threat. And Tiger isn’t in the field.

Bill Murray wore this two years ago at the event. Seriously.

Bill Murray wore this two years ago at the event. Seriously.

We saw some entertaining antics that veer from golf’s usual decorum at the Waste Management Phoenix Open last week. Well, the “fun” continues at Pebble Beach, where the rich and the famous play with the pros for the “pro-am” portion of the event.

It’s probably just me, but it seems like there are more bold-faced names than usual on this year’s list, which can be found here — though I have an updated version below, with additional entries, like Jim Harbaugh (the brother who was on the losing side of the Har-Bowl Super Bowl) and Condoleezza Rice. Also, I’ve noted their pro partner in parenthesis.

Watch out! -- Tiger on the prowl...

Tiger Woods finally went on a birdie run, dropping five birdies in six holes on his first nine, the back, at Pebble Beach on Saturday morning. After we’d seen Tiger bomb drive and driver in the fairway and hit green after green on his approach shots for two rounds, he actually didn’t have the best ballstriking day, despite posting his best round of the week. As it always is, the difference came with his putting — he needed 27 in the third round at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am on his way to firing a five-under 67 and jump to solo third, trailing Charlie Wi by four shots.

For a while, it looked like Woods would be paired with Padraig Harrington, but as it turned out, the three-time major champ struggled in his last five holes, including two bogeys and a double-bogey to drop out of contention (though he and his sandbagger amateur partner J.P McManus are still leading the pro-am portion of the event.

A likeable underdog is searching for his first win on the PGA Tour, trying to keep his nerve and hold off Woods, Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson, two-time champ a Pebble, among others. Oh, and Phil and Tiger are playing together in the penultimate group at 12:29 ET. It really doesn’t get much better than that — which I wrote in my Saturday column on Golf.com.

Tebowing possible at Pebble Beach

With Tiger Woods opening his 2012 PGA Tour season at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, the event was already going to be a zoo. Now there’s chatter of the possibility of Tim Tebow playing alongside Tiger in the tournament, according to a report from Brian Hewitt of GlobalGolfPost.com:

Jessica Simpson, Tiger and Romo = cute threesome!

Thanks to Shoshana for keeping me posted on the news while I was busy sunning myself on the beach — including the chatter about Tiger Woods kicking off his 2012 PGA Tour schedule at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, which the AP’s Doug Ferguson insinuated in November. On New Year’s Day a tweet from Golf Channel’s Jason Sobel triggered rumors that Tiger and Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback Tony Romo will play together at Pebble Beach, where the pros team up with celebs to compete in a tournament within the tournament.
