After an opening round 71 that put him well outside the cutline, some felt that it wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing if Jordan Spieth missed weekend play at the John Deere Classic, so he could show up earlier at St Andrews to prepare for the Open Championship. Spieth, of course, won the first two majors of the year, and is gunning to win his third consecutive major and looking to achieve golf’s most difficult accomplishment — the Grand Slam (winning all four majors in one season) — and has been criticized for his decision to remain loyal to the event where he won his first title on the PGA Tour.

"He's a Cinderella boy. Tears in his eyes, I guess, as he lines up this last shot.."

I never quite found the appropriate time to ask Tom Gillis if he could remember how many times he’d seen the inside of a media center before this week, but given his candor and realistic view of his good yet unspectacular career, I doubt he would have minded. Gillis is a self-described prototypical journeyman — a guy who bounced back-and-forth from the Nationwide Tour and the PGA Tour, along with just about every other international circuit.

Your new No. 1

Rory McIlroy knew exactly what he needed to do at the Honda Classic to overtake Luke Donald as number one in the world rankings. It was simple (and the same as a week earlier at the Match Play): win.

Rory's got fan boys

;

A group of guys arrived at the Honda Classic wearing brown, curly wigs to cheer on Rory McIlroy. The front of their shirts said, “Kiss Me, I’m Rory.” The back had next Monday’s new world rankings, with McIlroy at the No. 1 spot.

He’s close.

Tiger's son Charlie watches daddy

Tiger Woods hit a spectator in the head, dumped one in the hazard on the par-3 5th (his 14th of the day), struggled with his ballstriking, but he scrambled his way to a two-under 68 at PGA National to safely make weekend play. Phew. Tournament directors, sponsors, network executives and fans can stop panicking and rest easy.

Yes, “Tiger makes the cut” is now breaking news. Weird. (Maybe stranger that I’m not used to it by now?)
