Tiger still hurt, still no idea when he'll be healthy

Tiger Woods spoke on Tuesday at Aronimink Golf Club, the site for the AT&T National, which benefits his foundation. He hasn’t hit balls since withdrawing from The Players Championship last month and didn’t know whether he’d be back in time for the British Open at Royal St. George’s in a few weeks (but he didn’t rule it out, either).

No Tiger at US Open: There go the ratings and ticket sales!

Tiger Woods announced via his Twitter  that he has pulled out of the US Open at Congressional next week due to injuries he suffered during the third round of the Masters in April. On Tuesday afternoon he tweeted, “Not playing in US Open. Very disappointed. Short-term frustration for long-term gain.”

About a half-hour before his scheduled press conference at Aronimink Golf Club to promote AT&T National, the tournament that benefits his foundation, Tiger Woods tweeted (screenshot above), “Almost press conference time. I’ll donate one million dollars to @TWFoundation if no one asks me about the leg.”

Tiger says he probably came back too soon at The Players

Surprise! — Tiger Woods didn’t say anything surprising in his AT&T National media day presser at Aronimink Golf Club. Woods is wearing a protective boot for his injured left Achilles tendon and using crutches to take pressure off his left knee and calf.

Tiger on one leg

Don’t expect to see Tiger Woods at the Memorial Tournament in two weeks, but he’ll hopefully be healthy for the US Open at Congressional next month. Last Thursday on on his first tee shot at The Players Championship, Woods reinjured his left knee, which led to aggravation of his calf and Achilles tendon, but didn’t cause any new damage. The treatment plan? Rest.

Tiger and Sean Foley bonding, man

It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, but Tiger’s withdrawal from the Player’s dominates today’s headlines, with every major outlet publishing at least one piece on the former World Number One’s travails.

For some reason, this latest debacle has captured the journalistic imagination in a way that several of Woods’ most recent setbacks haven’t. The public nature of the humbling, perhaps, the wealth of figurative significance afforded by the image of a formerly implacable golfing force reduced to baby steps and the ignominy of enduring one fluffed shot after another, has left everyone with the sense that something important has just occurred, even if they can’t agree on what that something might be.

O'Meara turns back the clock

54-year-old Mark O’Meara fired a six-under 66 at TPC Sawgrass on Thursday. And no, he wasn’t playing in the Senior Players Championship — he’s keeping up with the kids this week. O’Meara credits his incredible round to his fantastic putting. He only needed 24 putts. He’s currently tied for third and two shots behind first-round leader Nick Watney, who fired a blistering 64. Naturally, during O’Meara’s presser, he was asked about his good friend and former-Orlando neighbor Tiger Woods’ withdrawing after nine holes. O’Meara, who says Tiger seems “extremely happy,” was shocked when he heard the news.

Tiger made a dash for the parking lot

Matt Kuchar and Martin Kaymer started the day playing in a three-ball at TPC Sawgrass, but nine holes into the round, it turned into a two-ball after Tiger Woods withdrew, citing injury. Woods has been recovering from a Grade 1 mild medical collateral ligament sprain to his left knee (the same one that’s endured four surgeries) and a mild strain to his left Achilles tendon. He shot a dreadful six-over 42, which included rolling in a 17-footer for triple-bogey on the fourth hole. Before leaving, he said the pain started on the first tee shot.

The shot where Tiger hurt himself at the Masters

Tiger Woods announced on Tuesday that he incurred an injury during the third round of the Masters, forcing him to skip next week’s Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow. First of all, it’s interesting Tiger called to apologize to tournament directors for missing an event that he hadn’t even entered. (Maybe he should have called The Heritage and New Orleans, too??)
