Nice job by AT&T and Jordan Spieth for making this fun and cool opportunity happen. I especially love this because I’m a massive Spelling Bee nerd — ever since I was a little kid, but clearly didn’t have the abilities of the best in the country!

But I digress. After 13-year-old Jairam Hathwar was crowned co-champion of the National Spelling Bee Contest, Jordan heard that golf was Jairam’s favorite sport and that he was his favorite player.  So, he invited him out to The Barclays at Bethpage Black in Jairam’s home state of New York –- and to participate in a friendly putting/spelling competition.

Spoiler: Good thing Jordan is such a great putter!!!

The FedEx Cup playoffs create turmoil, and players who have had mediocre/bad seasons can turn it around with wins and high finishes. For example, the 2,500 points awarded to the winner at the Barclays would most likely bump no. 125, Robert Allenby, into the top-5 of the FedEx Cup standings.

Rory McIlroy’s great play is garnering a lot of attention, but the interest factor is multiplied when Tiger Woods is around. That is exactly why their appearance on The Tonight Show was a hit, and why their Ice Bucket Challenge video was awesome too.

Here’s something you don’t see every day! – two holes-in-one in two consecutive groups. K.J. Choi, who was playing in the group right ahead of Greg Chalmers, aced the par-3 14th (arguably one of the best holes at Liberty National).

No big deal, though, says Chalmers, who then, a few minutes later, steps up and matches Choi’s effort.

What was Nos. 13 and 14 at Plainfield on Sunday

There was never a doubt the PGA Tour made the right call by cutting The Barclays, the first leg of the FedExCup playoffs, to a 54-hole contest with Hurricane Irene headed for the Eastern seaboard. Further validation came via pictures after Plainfield Country Club endured Irene’s fury of rain overnight Saturday and Sunday morning.

POW!

Congrats to Dustin Johnson and his caddie Joe LaCava for their two-shot victory over Matt Kuchar (and Hurricane Irene) at The Barclays. The weather-shortened 54-hole event finally caught a break on Saturday morning — other than a few passing showers, it stayed clear at Plainfield and play was completed before it got too ugly.

That said, I’m driving back to NYC now instead of finishing a more in-depth post. Here’s a quick summary: DJ overpowered Plainfield, his length was a huge advantage (course played long in the wet conditions), he’s been working really hard on his putting earlier this week and it paid off.

Johnson and LaCava: a match made in heaven

After launching a 332-yard drive to the middle of the fairway, Dustin Johnson only had a 3-iron into the 588-yard, par-5 12th. Unfortunately, he had an awkward stance and pulled his approach shot into the narrow hazard that encircles the green.

He walked into the hazard with a wedge and took some practice swings in the air. Johnson stared down at his ball, with a hesitant but eager look in his eyes, taking his time to contemplate whether or not he should hit it.

So, what's your plan to get out of here after we're done tomorrow?

With Hurricane Irene storming up the east coast Friday morning and expected to hit the New Jersey area overnight tomorrow, PGA Tour officials and Barclays representatives decided to shorten the first leg of the FedExCup playoffs from 72 holes to — hopefully pending Saturday morning’s weather — 54 holes.

Storms suspended play on Thursday and Irene will likely disrupt The Barclays, causing it to run into OT

With the wrath of Hurricane Irene expected to ravage the New Jersey area on Saturday night and the storms on Thursday morning that suspended first-round play at The Barclays at Plainfield Country Club for four hours and six minutes, Tour officials are weighing the options for play over the weekend and just finishing the first leg of the FedExCup playoffs.
