Rory McIlroy unveiled Tuesday he has signed a multiyear, “long-term” deal with TaylorMade to play with its bag, full set of clubs and ball. Yep, all 14 clubs in his bag plastered with the company’s logo will be produced by TaylorMade.
Big news on the Tiger Woods front this week: Well, first of all, he’s making his 42nd comeback to competitive golf at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, where he’s won eight times — seven of these PGA Tour titles and one U.S. Open (on a broken leg!). This event is much more significant than that little tournament in the Bahamas with 17 people in the field, where Woods placed 15th, last month.
It will mark Woods’ return to the PGA Tour in 17 months after enduring several back surgeries and procedures in 2015. He says he feels different, though, and he’s also thrown in some new clubs into the bag — since his sponsor Nike Golf announced last year that it will no longer manufacture golf clubs.
Tiger Woods might be involved in a Chicago lakefront golf project — a vision NBC/Golf Channel commentator Mark Rolfing has long considered a dream concept, “combining the Jackson Park and South Shore golf courses to create a South Side mecca near the site of the planned Obama library,” according to my boy Teddy Greenstein of the Chicago Tribune. Given it’s a heavyweight project featuring bold-faced names, naturally, Mike Keiser, the mastermind behind the popular Bandon Dunes Resort on the coast of Oregon, is also involved as an adviser.
Welcome to this year’s edition of the WUP Holiday Gift Guide for Golfers. If you have a golfer on your gift list, then you’ve come to the right place for some ideas and/or inspiration. As someone who has lots of golf-crazed friends and family, these are the items that they’ll probably be unwrapping this holiday season. Once again, I’ve tried to mix it up from brands, price range and gender, as well as adding my own creative editorial vision.
Good luck shopping over the next couple of weeks. And don’t worry, you’re not alone — I’ve been experiencing major anxiety every time I approach a store and/or trying to figure out how to tackle getting everyone on my list the best present on the planet.
Timing is always everything, isn’t it? I was walking back to the media center from a nearly empty range when I saw Ernie Els, one of two players still practicing on the eve of the European Tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship. I almost kept going, but I figured golf fans would love to see The Big Easy hitting balls. In other words, it was a perfect moment to use Periscope — and it turned out to be even better than I thought.
Ernie, who was in charge of the redesign at Wentworth, the event’s venue, saw me watching him and pointing my phone at him, so he said hello and asked what I was doing (mostly, I think he was surprised to see me on this side of the pond because there isn’t much American media here). I started to explain Periscope to him and his interest piqued. I mean, he got really into it — he answered questions, demonstrated a swing tip, showed off his clubs and more.
You can watch the video above, but you should really download Periscope if you can and watch it on the app for the full effect because you can see all the comments and how Ernie was interacting with fans.
Welcome to this year’s edition of the WUP Holiday Gift Guide. It’s not quite as fancy as last year’s — no special photoshoot — but I think there’s more diversity and a variety of options in different price ranges, so you can find a special gift for your golfer friends and family.
Images of TaylorMade’s new R15 driver (the Japanese version, which is slightly different than the American edition) were leaked on the interwebs on Thursday.
We have confirmed that TaylorMade is launching an R15 driver – offered in black and white. Like previous R series TaylorMade drivers, this one appears to be fully adjustable, evidenced by the two sliding weights and loft sleeve technology.
I’m attending an event introducing the product tonight, so stay tuned for more details…
The TaylorMade Tuned Performance Studio is the place to go for a FREE club fitting in SoCal. It’s hard to believe this service is being offered pro bono at the beautifully designed Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo, but it is, and it’s time for you to take advantage of it.
Father’s Day is around the corner and if you’re a last-minute shopper like I am, you’re probably still looking for gift ideas (though it is Father’s Day practically every week for my step-dad). Well, you’re in luck because WUP has some great products — everything from the latest hot clubs to the hippest gadgets — that your golf-crazed dad will love.
