Lexi Thompson spoke with the media for the first time since her heartbreaking loss 24 days ago at the ANA Inspiration after incurring a four-stroke penalty that ultimately cost her the trophy at the LPGA’s opening major of the year. Ahead of this week’s Volunteers of America Texas Shootout, the 22-year-old American held an emotional press conference Wednesday afternoon and broke down in tears at one point as she started to answer a question about the controversial rules infraction that a “concerned” viewer spotted on the telecast from the previous day’s round and brought it to the attention of an LPGA rules official via email during Sunday’s final round.

Ah, the good ol’ Friday night news dump! — at least Tiger Woods has the courtesy to do it at a *reasonable* hour, but hey, I guess that’s the benefit of being on the West Coast at the moment.

Dustin Johnson issued a statement late Friday night that he has withdrawn his name from the Olympics due to the threat of the Zika virus. Here is his full statement:

Round one of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Westchester Country Club is in the books, and the afternoon wave certainly lit up the golf course, with Jenny Shin posting an impressive bogey-free seven-under 66 to take the lead.

“I started the round feeling a little uncertain,” said Shin. “I didn’t know how I was going to play, I really didn’t know. I talked to my psychologist last night about how I was freaking out for this round, so I tried to play as comfortable as I can, just like any other tournament. I tried not to think of it as a major and it turned out great. I had a couple bogey-free rounds last week, so I think I’m on a good run here.”

Brittany Lincicome earned her second jump into Poppie’s Pond when it was all said and done after a thrilling finish at the ANA Inspiration, the LPGA’s first major of the season. Lincicome, who overcame a four-shot deficit at the start of the day and didn’t realize the significance at the time, rolled in a 10-footer for eagle on the par-5 18th in regulation — yep, the 72nd hole — to get to nine-under for the championship.

Although Stacy Lewis didn’t win the Race to the CME Globe, she came in second (to Lydia Ko) and walked away with $150,000 bonus. More important, she beat Inbee Park in the tight contest for the coveted end of the year awards. Lewis wrapped up an impressive 2014 season by sweeping the three most prestigious honors in women’s golf — Rolex Player of the Year, Vare Trophy and LPGA Official Money List title.

Lewis becomes the first American to take home all three awards since Betsy King in 1993 and the first player since Yani Tseng in 2011.

For world no. 1 Stacy Lewis, there are six majors in women’s golf — along with the five Grand Slam events, there’s also the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship. With the event at Pinnacle Golf Club being only a twenty-minute drive from the University of Arkansas, where she spent five years playing an esteemed college career, Lewis felt added pressure competing in her adopted state.

Michelle Wie gave an emphatic fist pump after making a 20-footer for birdie on the 71st hole of the U.S. Women’s Open because she knew a two-stroke lead would be all she needed heading to the final hole. A par at the last gave the 24-year-old her first major victory, and “a dream come true.”

With a top-10 in 11 of 13 LPGA events this season, it is safe to say Stacy Lewis will contend at the 69th U.S. Open. Lewis has risen to number one in the Rolex World Rankings, and will be looking to improve on her career best T3 finish at the 2008 Open.

World no. 2 Inbee Park shot the best round of the year to win the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic in Ontario, Canada. The 10-under 61 gave Park a three-stroke victory over Cristie Kerr, and momentum heading into the U.S. Women’s Open in a couple weeks.
