Yahoo’s Devil Ball blog has the best video of Miguel Angel Jimenez’s ridiculous bank shot off the wall behind the Road Hole that popped onto the green as softly as a Phil Mickelson flop shot. The reaction of his playing partner is priceless.

This clip doesn’t have how Jimenez stymied himself with the shot before, when his ball somehow stopped just short of the Road Hole Bunker. Jimenez was left with an impossible flop shot off a skimpy lie, and airmailed it onto the road. Unfortunately, Jimenez still made double-bogey. He’s 3-under after a third-round 74.

But doesn’t this highlight capture all that is quirky and lovable about links golf, and especially St. Andrews?


The recent change on the famous 17th hole at St. Andrews has stirred up some controversy and mixed feelings. Known in the past as one of the most difficult holes in the game, it lost some of its menace over the years. For the 2010 British Open, the R&A pushed the tees back 40 yards to make it more challenging.
