Rory McIlroy opened the 2015-16 season at the Frys.com Open with a solid four-under 67 at Silverado’s North Course. With an early tee time, McIlroy got off to a slow start after making bogey on his fourth hole (no. 13), but managed to bounce back with five birdies to keep himself in the mix.

Perhaps he was nursing a headache for the first few holes after consuming a few too many glasses of wine the night before. With the tournament taking place in the middle of California’s wine country, Rory admits it’s tough to find the right formula to both enjoy the fruits of Napa and play competitive golf.

Welcome to the new PGA Tour season! Wait, what? Didn’t the last one just end, like, two weeks ago? It sure did. And wasn’t the Presidents Cup last weekend? It sure was. But golf doesn’t really have an offseason (partly because it’s always 80 degrees and sunny somewhere).

To be honest, it doesn’t really feel like a new season — well, with the exception of all the new (and old) faces who have graduated from the Web.com Tour.

The buzz on Wednesday morning at Silverado was centered around two amateurs participating in the Frys.com Open pro-am. The crowds came out in droves not to see Rory McIlroy or Justin Rose per se, but rather to catch a glimpse of Steph Curry and Andre Iguodala of the Golden State Warriors.

Rory McIlroy is the top-ranked player at world no. 3 in the PGA Tour’s 2015-16 season opener at the Frys.com Open this week. Wait, it’s a new season already? Yep, it’s been an entire two weeks since the last one wrapped up at the Tour Championship, but the PGA Tour is back at it again.

Usually, bold-faced names like McIlroy would not be playing in the fall, especially since he still has six weeks left in the European Tour’s season, which culminates with the finale to the Race to Dubai in mid-November. McIlroy is basically making this start because of a deal that was struck in 2012.

Sang-Moon Bae captured the PGA Tour’s 2014-15 season-opener, the Frys.com Open, by two shots over Steven Bowditch, posting a 15-under total at Silverado’s North Course. (He also leads in FedExCup points!!!)

Bae, who secured his first-career victory at the 2013 Byron Nelson Championship, started his campaign for his second win heading into the final round with a commanding four-shot lead. He extended it to as many as six strokes throughout the round, but a bogey on no. 8 led to a shaky stretch of holes — he bogeyed four of the next seven, though he balanced it out with two birdies.
