Wowza!

Wowza!

Bubba Watson has pulled off seemingly impossible shots throughout his career (e.g., 2011 Masters) — it’s his MO. Watson wowed and impressed once again, but this time in Shanghai at Sheshan International Golf Club in the final round of the WGC-HSBC Champions.

After Watson snagged the solo lead on the back nine, he ran into trouble on nos. 16 and 17 with a bogey and double-bogey, respectively. And just like that, he had dropped three shots. Heading into the 18th with a two-shot deficit to Tim Clark, who was safely in the clubhouse, Watson needed an eagle on the par-5 final hole to force a playoff.

Weeman gets his special moment

Weeman gets his special moment

It’s tradition at the HSBC Champions for the annual Caddie Awards to occur at a banquet the night before the competition begins. The most coveted trophy, of course, is “Caddie of the Year.” Martin Kaymer’s looper, Craig Connelly, was crowned as this year’s winner.

Patrick Reed’s “outspokenness” — or rather his choice of words — got him into trouble during the first round of the HSBC Champions in Shanghai. After missing a six-footer on the first hole (his 10th of the day), he muttered to himself, “Don’t f***ing three-putt you f***ing f*ggot.”

Following the second round at Sheshan International Golf Club, the 24-year-old American spoke with reporters and apologized for his outburst, which was picked up by the TV camera and microphone for the world to hear.

Hear that, everyone?

Shhhhhhh

Surprise! — a professional golfer made a homophobic comment!

Perhaps Patrick Reed should heed some of his own advice and “shhhhhh” himself. The outspoken American has gotten himself into hot water at the HSBC Champions in China.

During the first round at Sheshan International Golf Club, Reed missed a six-footer on no. 1 (his 10th of the day), and reprimanded himself, saying, “Don’t f***ing three-putt you f***ing f*ggot.” His tantrum was caught on camera and it’s certainly created backlash for Reed. Here’s the GIF, where you can clearly hear the gay slur:

Dustin grabs on and bring ‘er home

In a hard-fought battle between three world-class players, Dustin Johnson clinched the most significant victory of his career (so far) at the HSBC Champions at Sheshan International Golf Club. On the back nine the 29-year-old American played a key stretch of five holes at five-under, including a chip-in on the short par-4 16th.

As we reported earlier this week, the PGA Tour has partnered with the China Golf Association (CGA) and event promoter China Olympic Sports Industry (COSI) to form a new professional golf tour in China that will debut in 2014 with 12 tournaments throughout the country.

The creation of China Tour-PGA Tour China Series will be announced today by Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem, along with CGA and COSI officials.

Kiss that ball!

Kiss the ball!

Despite rolling in 10 birdies and playing one of the best rounds of his life on Saturday in the third round of the HSBC Champions, Dustin Johnson walked off Sheshan International rather disappointed. He fired a six-under 66, but he wasn’t jumping for joy afterwards because of his poor finish and missed opportunity to open a five-shot lead heading into the final round after making a double-bogey on the reachable-in-two par-5 18th.

kaymer

After opening with scores of  70-74, Martin Kaymer would have been thrilled with a solid weekend and perhaps sneaking in a top 10 finish. While he’s still trailing leader Dustin Johnson by eight shots, Kaymer went out and fired a record-breaking 10-under 62 to surge up the leaderboard.

These guys look right at home!

You may have seen these photos already from earlier this week, but internet connection in China is rough, to say the least.

Five of the world’s leading golfers today joined performers from a renowned Chinese opera company to celebrate the return of “Asia’s Major” to Shanghai. I really have no words.

Oh, I did find out today that the Chinese are big fans of Jason Dufner — they really like him and think he’s “cute.” His mystique apparently transcends cultures and language barriers!

Please caption this photo of Phil Mickelson and Ian Poulter. It needs to be done:

Dustin Johnson has a lot of fans in China

Dustin Johnson soared up the leaderboard, firing a nine-under 63 that included 10 birdies and one bogey to steer him five clear of the field as he heads into the weekend at the HSBC Champions. Johnson usurped his long-hitting, bomber style of play to overpower Sheshan International Golf Club, rolling in birdies on six of his first seven holes to quickly catch first-round leader Rory McIlroy.
