Former PGA Tour pro and broadcaster extraordinaire  John Maginnes and I talk and babble about all things — well, for the most part — PGA Championship. I was able to lure Maginnes away from the bar to record this, so I owe him a few cold ones. Anyway, I’m sure our drunk jabber was amusing and hopefully, at least a bit entertaining and informative.

(*Update: At the 23 minute, 20 second mark, I ask Maginnes for his non-Tiger picks. Check out the first guy he named…)

Odds on this happening again?

The draw has been made for the 93rd USPGA Championship. Yes, that is the one happening next week at Atlanta Athletic Club. There are apparently 14 PGA champions and 30 major champions in this year’s field– thank you, press release– making this year’s one of the strongest USPGA fields in recent memory.

I haven’t had time to spend a great deal of time with the list yet, but these are the pairings that immediately grabbed my attention:

Stuart Appleby's best finish at the Sony Open was in 2000 when he placed 2nd

Shigeki Maruyama? Stuart Appleby? What year is it? 2001? Playing the morning wave at Waialae Country Club, Maruyama shot another five-under 65 to take the clubhouse lead early in the second round of the Sony Open. With blustery conditions developing in the afternoon, Appleby posted an impressive four-under 66 to tie him at 10-under at the event’s halfway mark.

After firing a three-over 74 in the first round of the US Open, a grumpy Tiger Woods moaned over the conditions, particularly the greens — the same ones he putted on when he ran away from the field by an astounding 15 strokes at the 2000 US Open. But in 2010, he needed 34 putts to get around Pebble Beach, so naturally, the greens have suddenly become shoddy.
