Thinking of you: European team bags bearing an unmistakable silhouette.

In deference to the formidable competitive spirit of his close friend and Ryder Cup comrade, Seve Ballesteros, who passed away in May of last year, European team captain José Maria Olazabal has made space for at least two low-key tributes to the five-time major champion during this week’s festivities.

Most of you will be reasnonably familiar with his biography already (in case you’re not, or you just want to remind yourself what a force the Spaniard was in his day, have a quick read of this bullet-point timelime the Irish Times has put together), so linking to obituaries or platitudinous interviews with stunned friends or relatives is of no real purpose.

Severiano Ballesteros: European golf's most charismatic ambassador

Precise details are unavailable at this stage, but it appears that Seve Ballesteros is suffering what a family statement refers to as ‘a severe worsening in [his] neurological state‘. The Spaniard, a genuine icon of the game, has been undergoing treatment for brain cancer since a public collapse led to the discovery of a tumour in late 2008.
