What a strange turn of events in the second round at the PGA Championship. As Conor noted, there was a distinct lack of atmosphere at Atlanta Athletic Club, and even though he was watching from across the pond in Dublin, Ireland, I was quite impressed with how well he captured the mood.

Call the medley of names at the leaderboard what you’d like — the most popular (and blunt) descriptions I’ve heard range from “no names” to “anonymous pros mixed in with veterans” to “the worst ever at major since the ’03 US Open.” A more tactful approach would be “fresh faces” or “young talent and reserved 40-somethings.”

Frustration: Friday's default setting (Kyle Auclair/insidetheropes.com)

Phil Mickelson, defending champion of The Masters, was already a favorite heading into Augusta next week, but after besting Scott Verplank on Sunday to capture the Shell Houston Open by three shots, the odds of Phil as the front runner just got even better. Apologies for the tardiness on this post, but I’ve been recovering from two fantastic weeks on the road (and still jetlagged). Thanks to the Travelers Championship for having me last week — the communications team running the tournament was very helpful and hospitable. It’s no wonder why the event is so beloved by the locals and the pros who come every year. And Padraig Harrington, who was only making his second appearance in Hartford, told me (and two others) on Sunday he’d “go out of his way to return.” Ditto.

Anyway, this space is for the random tidbits and quotes I picked up that went previously unused. Sometimes it happens to be some of the most interesting content, too. At least in my humble opinion. Keep reading, if you will.

I crept under the ropes and perched myself on the hill next to the CBS cameras on the 18th green just in time to watch Scott Verplank knock his approach to about 8 feet on the first playoff hole. It was a weird sight to see Corey Pavin, the shortest hitter on the Tour, Bubba Watson, the longest hitter on the Tour, and Verplank, one of the steadiest players on the Tour, standing in the fairway together.
