Jimmy Walker wasn’t going to let a second tournament slip through his fingers in the same week. After losing in a playoff to Patrick Reed at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions on Monday, Walker got redemption on Sunday, firing an impressive bogey-free, seven-under 63.

Not only did he successfully defend his title at the Sony Open, he ran away from the field, posting a 23-under total at Waialae Country Club en route to a nine-shot victory over Scott Piercy. The record for the largest margin of victory at this event was previously seven strokes, which was held by Paul Azinger in 2000.

Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler in a practice round on Tuesday at ANGC

The first- and second-round pairings are out for the Masters! I’ll cut to the chase —  Tiger Woods is grouped with Luke Donald and Scott Piercy at 10:45am on Thursday.

Maybe it’s just me, but the Green Coats seemed to have more fun with the pairings just a few years ago. Wait, no, they don’t have a sense of humor. I’m thinking of the U.S. Open. Duh. 18th green at Scioto CC with the clubhouse in the back drop

It really was the “longest day in golf” — it was so long that the U.S. Open sectional qualifying spilled over into Tuesday in Memphis. Play was postponed to the following day due to storms. Dennis Miller and Casey Martin’s stories held up as the best Cinderella stories.

Meanwhile, where did I leave off in Columbus?

Two faceless pros at Q-school practice putting with unconventional grips

Just a few miles down the road from the site of this week’s PGA Tour Q-School, Orange County National, there’s one of the many massive welcome signs to the Walt Disney World Resort emblazoned with the slogan “Where Dreams Come True.” For the 166 (minus the dozen or so PGA Tour veterans) relative unknowns, faceless mini tour players or just-turned pros within six rounds of achieving a lifetime’s goal, it’s a preface to the week less sappy and overwrought than it is deadly serious.

We hear similar storylines every year, but what’s the atmosphere like the day before it starts? Surprisingly, rather relaxed in a zoo-like way. Call it the calm before the storm. And how about the mentality of the players? Cool and collected, for now.

By Stephanie Wei under FedEx Cup

For those sitting on the edge of their seats on Sunday wondering who would play their way in (or out) of the FedEx Cup, you need not wait any longer! — Scott Piercy was the only player in the field to improve his position with a T8 finish to move 15 spots up in the standings at 125th on the dot. Meanwhile, Chris Stroud, who started the week at 124th, was bumped out because of Piercy’s solid showing. Jeff Quinney also had an opportunity to make it, but came up short and only boosted his position by one spot and just missed at 126th.
