Russell Henley found his second start at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions at Kapalua’s Plantation Course much more to his liking than his maiden voyage last year, where he failed to break 70 and finished 27th in the 30-man field. Henley opened 2015 with a bogey-free, eight-under 65 to take the early first-round lead by a shot over Sang-Moon Bae.

C'mon Aussie!

C’mon Aussie!

Battling tough and windy conditions at the Valero Texas Open on Sunday, Steven Bowditch held on to capture his first PGA Tour victory. Despite missing a three-footer on the last hole, the 30-year-old Australian had enough of a cushion to still win by a stroke over Will MacKenzie, who has finished 6th or better in three of his last four starts, and Daniel Summerhays.

Bowditch shot a final-round, four-over 76 — the highest non-major score by a winner since Fred Couples at the 1983 Kemper Open. But, who cares, a win is a win at the end of the day.

Kirk eyes his third victory Kirk eyes his third victory[/caption]

Despite struggling with his driver off the tee, Chris Kirk shot a five-under 65 to take a one-shot lead over fellow University of Georgia alumnus Harris English and PGA Tour rookie Will Wilcox heading into the final round of the Sony Open.

Kirk made the most out of his round on Saturday at Waialae Country Club, which included a nine-footer for birdie on no. 18 to narrowly separate him from the clustered leaderboard. There are 26 players within five shots of the lead.

Boo's back!

Booooooooooooooo! No, they’re not booing! They’re Boo’ing.

Golf is better when Tiger Woods is winning tournaments and the only thing that makes it more fun is when Boo Weekley wins, too. He’s a redneck and talks like one (“ain’t” is a regular in his vocabulary), loves beer (the cheap, American kind) and singing (if you’re walking down the fairway with him, he’ll likely be crooning and making up his own lyrics to a familiar tune), and I’m pretty sure he golfs to support his fishing habit.

What you see is what you get, though he is smarter than he may lead you to believe, and everybody loves Boo, who broke his five-year victory drought at the Colonial Invitational.

The Course Whisperer

Early in the final round of the Tampa Bay Championship, there was at one point a six-way tie at the top. Best guess was one of those guys would emerge with the trophy. And that’s not counting defending champion and the highest ranked player in the field, world no. 3, Luke Donald, who was lurking just behind the pack, which included Boo Weekley, Justin Leonard, Greg Chalmers, George Coetzee and Kevin Streelman.

As it happened, Streelman — whose previous most notable title heading into the week was something called the Kodak Challenge — emerged from the bunch and separated himself when he hit “probably the best shot of my life in that situation,” knocking a five-iron to six feet on No. 13. He rolled in the putt for birdie and never looked back and clinched it on the penultimate hole.
