Rory_McIlroy_Fires_Caddie-1021x580

There were murmurs on Sunday during the Canadian Open that Rory McIlroy had split with his caddie of nine years J.P. Fitzgerald. Well, at least one Tour player had already learned of the news before teeing off in the final round. This relative unknown player shared the information with those in his group, which completely caught them off-guard. At first they thought it was a joke, so the player had to clarify that he was serious.

Rule no. 1: Believe none of what you hear and half of what you see. I’ve been around long enough to know that rumors fly around the Tour more than any other group of people I’ve ever encountered (and that says quite a bit, to be honest). The kind of BS that spreads doesn’t surprise me anymore, but it did when I first started covering the Tour (which feels like a lifetime ago now). Anyway, of course there is often some truth or even truth to things you “hear.” I feel like I have a decent amount of experience at this point to smell out what’s worth pursuing and what’s not. A lot of the time it’s just dumb gossip that you wouldn’t repeat because, well, it’s stupid. There are various factors to this super mathematical equation I’ve developed — 1) the source; and 2) the information.

I caught up with Andrew “Beef” Johnston (and his agent Shaun Reddin) on Saturday evening following the third round of the Scottish Open over drinks and dinner at their hotel restaurant in Ayrshire, about 15 miles down the road from Dundonald Links.

Now, this type of thing doesn’t happen every week (or ever)–it’s not exactly normal for an agent to agree to a last-minute podcast recording the night before the final round of a tournament, especially when the player is on the first page of the leaderboard! But Beef and Shaun aren’t your average tour player and agent, respectively, and that’s why we love them– they’re just ordinary blokes.

Mo Martin hit the shot of her life on the 72nd hole at Royal Birkdale in the RICOH Women’s British Open. Heading into the 18th hole, she trailed the leader at the time, ShanShan Feng, by two shots, but then, Martin placed her drive down the left side of the fairway and struck a perfect 3-wood that rolled up and nearly rolled in for a rare albatross. Instead, the ball ricocheted off the pin to about six feet for eagle. She drained what turned out to be the winning putt for her first major victory (and first win on the LPGA), celebrating with an emphatic fist pump.

I caught up with third-round leader Inbee Park after she fired a four-under 68 in the third round of the RICOH Women’s British Open. It happened to be her birthday! — what a great way to celebrate with a superb round.

Park is vying for the career Grand Slam. She captured the first three majors of the season in 2013 and also won the U.S. Women’s Open in 2008.
