I walked away from my first trip to New Orleans and covering the Zurich Classic, thinking, uh, why wasn’t I here last year? It’s got it all — awesome city, great tournament with field, friendly people, scrumptious food, eclectic sweet-sounding tunes (especially at Jazz Fest — for the record, seeing Tom Petty live was a massive highlight, along with walking home from the Fair Grounds through Treme, aka a neighborhood some wouldn’t recommend trekking through, back to the French Quarter), and vibrant culture and atmosphere.

Rocco and Tiger

Rocco Mediate is known for his good-natured candor and speaking his mind — even when it comes to somewhat controversial topics, like the state of Tiger Woods’ game.

Mediate, whom Woods beat in an 19-hole playoff at his last major win, the ’08 US Open, is the defending champion of the Frys.com Open, the Fall Series event that Tiger committed to playing earlier this week.

Tiger Woods trying to get into contention!

Day two at Bay Hill and Spencer Levin is in the process of lapping the field… or is he? Three-under for the day through the turn, he’s nine-under par for the tournament and six shots clear of a group that consists of Steve Marino, the Playmobil Kid (Fowler) and Hunter Mahan, with the latter two yet to tee off. I’ve been a fan of Levin’s game for some time– here’s hoping this is his week!

Hawaii One-O: Rocco Mediate aces No. 11 in a practice round at the Plantation Course

The pros are already arriving in Maui and some are even grinding it out at The Plantation course! The above action shot comes courtesy of friend of WUP and Kapalua’s unofficial mayor Gary Planos. This morning in a practice round for the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, Rocco Mediate aced the par-3 No. 11 with a 7-iron.

Rocco Mediate waves to the adoring crowd

Rocco Mediate has a job again! The fan favorite entered the Frys.com Open 182nd on the PGA Tour money list and had signed up for Q-school, but after his thrilling victory on Sunday over Alex Prugh and Bo Van Pelt, Rocco doesn’t belong there anymore.

Unfortunately, I didn’t catch the thrilling action. I had the TV in the midst of Rocco’s bogey streak and nonchalantly turned off the TV before heading to the pool (yes, I’m still in paradise, but not for long). Thankfully, Intern Kevin gave me the riveting play-by-play of the last four holes via the phone. His first comments were something like, “Rocco is missing four-footers like they’re going out of style!” (Mediate had something like a five-shot lead going into the final round.)

When Rocco Mediate was the odd man out in the six dudes for five spots playoff at the US Open sectional qualifying in Columbus, OH, he walked off the course saying to the press, “Don’t even bother, guys. For the first time ever, I’m not going to say anything.” Turns out he was the first alternate on the USGA’s reallotment list.

With someone other than Nathan Green winning the St. Jude Classic, Rocco nabbed the 156th spot in the field, which is now set barring any last-minute withdrawals.

Mediate last made major headlines around two years ago when he found himself in a dramatic 18-hole playoff against Tiger Woods, whom he eventually lost to on the 19th extra hole.
