It’s been a big couple of days in sponsorship news on the PGA Tour. <<snooze alert>> I know, most of you don’t care who the title sponsor is of an event. How much does it really matter for fans, anyway?

Well, for those who do have a skin in the game, here’s the latest from the past few days: Northern Trust will sponsor its last event at Riviera Country Club next month, and going forward, the financial institution will become the title sponsor for the tournament formerly known as The Barclays, which is held annually in the New York/New Jersey area.

James Hahn’s story is straight out of Hollywood. Just a little less than a decade ago, Hahn was selling shoes at Nordstrom’s. Now, he’s a PGA Tour winner, after beating two stars — or at least two more well-known players — Dustin Johnson and Paul Casey in a playoff on the third extra hole at Riviera.

Hahn remembered a subtlety in the break of a 25-foot putt on the par-3 no. 14 and he drained it for birdie. He shook his fist in the air several times, but Johnson, who had hit it closer, still had yet to give his attempt a go. Hahn couldn’t watch when Johnson stepped up to the putt. However, after Johnson missed, Hahn had snagged his maiden PGA Tour victory at the Northern Trust Open.

Another gorgeous day at Riv
Jason Allred had already played in three Monday qualifiers in 2014. He even flew all the way to Hawaii to give it a go for the Sony Open, but to no avail. Then, he almost skipped the Monday for this week’s Northern Trust Open — he and his wife are expecting their third child in a few weeks.

Well, that was interesting. We were having a great #WUPHangout until we got trolled, which was an experience — yep, popped by troll cherry — and kind of funny. Except I was clearly super confused. We’ve figured out what happened, and as always, there was a silver lining!

Haas

Haas likes Riviera

Defending champion Bill Haas outplayed the rest of the pack, firing an impressive seven-under 64, three shots better than the next lowest round — which is the second-largest margin of the season (Phil Mickelson was four clear of the rest when his putt for 59 lipped out in the first round in Phoenix).

Haas kicked off the day in a ho-hum style, parring the first hole, which is playing the easiest this week, at Riviera. He opened with four straight pars before he appeared to get his rhythm going with birdies on Nos. 5 and 7. But the game-changer was rolling in a tough 30-footer for birdie on No. 9, chipping-in for eagle on No. 10 and getting up-and-down (for birdie) on No. 11, and then he made some good par saves to keep the momentum going.

In case you were out Friday night (ICYWOFN) — and I hope you were or at least had better things to do! — then you probably missed the #WUPHangout at Riviera.

Again, please give me some slack this week as it’s not exactly been an…errr…never mind. Feedback and constructive criticism is more than welcome. These Hangouts are still relatively new to me, so, you know, it’s a process.

One last thing: earlier this week, Shoshana was a guest on Dimplehead’s Podcast. Check it out.

Michelle Wie high-5s Lydia Ko for being absolutely awesome

Michelle Wie high-5s Lydia Ko for being absolutely awesome

Sorry I’ve been MIA. I’ve had some personal issues to sort out the last few days, but I’m back, and I’ve missed you all!

Not to get all sappy and cheesy, but I’m going to go there. Just wanted to give a quick shout-out to the few friends who have gone above and beyond to help a damsel in distress. A friend who asks his friend to take in a total stranger, no questions, is so underrated. I’ve expressed my undying gratitude to these wonderful people, but again, your kindness and friendship and support mean more to me than words can express (and have outweighed the crappiness or at least helped loads).

Alright, now let’s get on to what we’ve missed in golf news this week. Oh, by the way, I am in the L.A. area, and I will be at Riviera starting tomorrow (hopefully — I probably shouldn’t promise that given the way things have gone this week). It was just kind of difficult to pull myself away from refuge here

Take that, Phil (and Bill)!

First of all, be sure to check out this week’s PGA Tour Confidential over at Golf.com, along with the first-round pairings for the Match Play — which starts on Wednesday. If anyone wants to organize a pool or some type of bracket contest, let me know. Meanwhile, everyone keeps asking me, “Mexico or Match Play?” Neither! — I’m going home. (Woot!) I know I’ve mentioned it twice now, but hey, it’s been a while. Don’t worry, though, I’ll be back at it in time for the Honda Classic the following week.
