Rory McIlroy might sit out the rest of 2017. And honestly, I hope he does — it’s the “smart” thing to do, but also easier said than done for any competitor.

Following his final round three-under 68 at the PGA Championship, the four-time major champ revealed he hadn’t been completely honest with the extent to which his rib injury was still affecting him.

Rory McIlroy confirmed he had parted ways with his caddie of nine years JP Fitzgerald at his pre-tourney presser on Wednesday at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. The reason provided by the world no. 4 was basically the golfer-caddie version of the breakup line, “It’s not you, it’s me.” But…it actually is you, too. Hey, a relationship always involves at least two people. However, it was Rory’s most honest, diplomatic explanation.

If there was any question who the world no. 1 player in the world is at the moment, Rory McIlroy quashed any naysayers on Sunday at Quail Hollow Golf Club. Yep, he did it again. For the second time in the past three weeks, McIlroy took home the winner’s trophy at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Tiger posted his worst finish as a pro at the Masters last week (T40)

One promise Tiger Woods has kept since his fall from grace: He no longer waits until just before 5pm ET deadline the Friday prior to commit to tournaments. (I know, hand the guy a gold star!)

Earlier this week, the Wells Fargo Championship’s Twitter (sort of) scooped TigerWoods.com on the announcement. Well done. Tiger’s website added a few more details, along with his commitment to return to The Players Championship and reflections on Bay Hill and the Masters:

Sabbo was the center of controversy at Quail Hollow

Admit it. For a moment when you looked at the Wells Fargo Championship leaderboard and saw Rory Sabbatini had charged near the top, you got a little nervous, especially since the other players in contention looked a little shaky at times coming down the stretch. You were also impressed at how well Sabbo plays while under scrutiny for disciplinary matters. (When he won the Honda Classic in March, the Tour was considering suspending him for an incident at the Northern Trust Open.)

Fear the Beard!

Ed note: I didn’t intend for “A Short Game Saved My Life: the Lucas Glover Story” to turn into a novel. Forgive me, it was late when I finished. I’ve split the original post into two separate ones, but I’m also now realizing it’s rather long. My apologies, but hey, there was some pretty exciting action happening at Quail Hollow on Sunday. Go here to read the first one.

Lucas Glover overshot the 16th green at Quail Hollow and ended up in the collection area behind it. Barely a second after Glover struck his chip, a group of local fans, who may have had a few too many adult beverages, roared, “Beard Power!” His ball rolled down toward the front pin location and came to a rest four-feet from the cup. Several guys in the gallery reacted, yelling, “Go Tigers!”

Beard Power!

When Lucas Glover last hoisted a trophy — a major one, no less — he was one of the game’s 20-something rising stars. Nearly two years later, his finesse around the greens and top-notch putting were instrumental to his victory Quail Hollow, outlasting best friend and former Clemson teammate Jonathan Byrd in a sudden death playoff to capture the Wells Fargo Championship.

Perez Pissed

Pat Perez entered the final round one-shot behind 54-leader Jonathan Byrd, but faltered on Sunday, dropping to a tie for sixth after shooting 75. Other than kicking off the day with a birdie on the first, Perez quickly dropped down the leaderboard with consecutive bogeys and then a double-bogey on the seventh. Despite falling out of contention early on, he rallied back to give himself a shot at the title.

Fowler flips his hat backwards during pressers

For the second time in a month, Rickie Fowler was berated for an absolutely unforgivable crime of wearing his hat backwards. Fowler turns his hat around during interviews so people can see his face better, along with the logo to his website embroidered on the back. He’s not trying to be a trouble-making punk. In fact, he’s quite the opposite and known for being one of the most well-mannered players on the PGA Tour.
