Sifford was one of 18 recipients

Charlie Sifford was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, at a White House reception on Monday. The 92-year-old is only the third golfer to receive the illustrious distinction, following Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer.

Sifford is often referred to as the Jackie Robinson of golf, fighting hard to desegregate the color barrier in golf. He finally prevailed in 1961 when he became the first African-American to play on the PGA Tour, after the Caucasian-only clause was struck from PGA of America’s constitution.

The Prez says hello while walking back to the Oval Office after 9 holes

And you thought you had a good poker face. While a double top secret operation was in the works, President Obama carried on his duties, visiting the tornado-stricken Alabama, touring NASA’s facilities, giving a college commencement speech, cracking jokes at the White House Correspondents Dinner, and finally, hitting the links for nine holes on Sunday morning. But wait — those familiar with the President’s schedule know he usually plays 18 and he normally heads to the residence quarters after golfing. Instead, he rushed to the Oval Office…in his golf shoes. I mean, he’s practically running (pic below)!

What a historic (yester)day! With President Obama’s announcement last night, hitting a white ball around a field seems pretty insignificant (and it is compared to the “real” issues in the world, relatively speaking). Alas, this is a site about golf, so we’ll continue with golf commentary, but not before this silly random tidbit…
