The PGA Championship felt like a slog-fest for most of the week (or, dare I say, a poor man’s U.S. Open?) — super slick and firm greens, thunderstorms, weather delays, slow play, ultra long (after more rain Friday and overnight) tough scoring conditions — but then the last groups made the turn at Quail Hollow on Sunday, and suddenly, the fireworks and the drama broke out.

At the end of the day, Justin Thomas separated himself from the pack, hitting some gutsy shots and stroking in key putts, along with a couple of moments that felt like divine intervention or tacit approval from the golf gods.

ernie els phil mickelson 100th major

First things first, in the above photo, you can’t see that Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els are both wearing shorts. I’ve seen Els in shorts and I’m OK with it. I think today was the first time seeing Phil in them… and I just…it’s weird.

It was both a quiet and major news day on Tuesday at the PGA Championship. On a personal note (because I’m sure you care), I feel really behind because I was initially supposed to arrive on Sunday afternoon and then I pushed it back to Monday, but then because of inclement weather in the NYC area, flights were all delayed or canceled, so I didn’t get in until Tuesday afternoon (and my luggage didn’t arrive) — yep, off to a blazing good start! But all things considered, I can’t complain.

Despite the disappointing Ryder Cup loss (I’d only experienced it the other way around), the Team Europe press conference was amusing, funny and enjoyable, per usual. Even when addressing unpleasant topics, like the heckling and behavior of Saturday afternoon’s overserved fans, the players were witty and rather positive about the entire situation — they answered the questions even if it wasn’t the greatest discussion in the world.

There was only one point, where a player had a more serious critique of how things played out at the away game at Hazeltine near Minneapolis, MN. Justin Rose, who went 2-3-0, shifted the atmosphere slightly when he brought up the PGA of America’s setup of Hazeltine National Golf Club.

Even on Monday ahead of the PGA Championship, the vibe at Baltusrol GC was a bit strange,
with scorching heat and grounds were rather quiet for the first day of a major championship week. It turned out to be the hottest day of the week–with temperatures reaching at least 96 degrees at 4pm (but it “felt like” 119 degrees), but it’s not like Tuesday and Wednesday’s heat index provided much relief from the sweltering sun and suffocating humidity.

It’s been an interesting — perhaps the better word is “strange” — turn of events this weekend at the PGA Championship. With play suspended due to inclement weather in the area around 2pm Saturday, only 37 players finished the third round, with around 50 either still on the course or yet to tee off, including the last 5 groups (i.e. top 10 players on the leaderboard).

Players and media questioned the PGA of America’s decision to *not* start the third round with threesomes teeing off both nos. 1 and 10, given the forecast Saturday looked extremely questionable with a high chance of thunderstorms. However, PGA of America Championships Officer (set-up man) Kerry Haigh defended the decision, claiming that the weather was supposed to be similar to the first two rounds.

Well, we’ve always known Tom Watson was a man with strong principles (not to mention stubborn) — he sticks to his guns and he’s unwavering in his convictions. He’s also apparently very loyal.

Watson declined an offer to join the PGA of America’s Hall of Fame, according to a Golf World report.

The fallout from Donald Trump’s disparaging comments about Mexican immigrants continued Tuesday, with the PGA of America announcing that the Grand Slam of Golf, an exhibition which pits the year’s four major winners against each other in October, will *not* be held at Trump National in Los Angeles.

Add ESPN to the growing list of companies to cut ties with Donald Trump, following his derogatory remarks about Mexican immigrants in his presidential launch speech. The World Wide Leader has decided to move next week’s ESPY Celebrity Golf Classic from Trump National Golf Club to Pelican Hill Golf Club on July 14.

KPMG Women's PGA Champ Media Day

Next month’s KPMG Women’s PGA Championship was officially introduced on Monday at Westchester Country Club, the site of the inaugural event. Well, sort of. As organizers and executives from all parties, KPMG, the LPGA, and PGA of America, pointed out, this tournament is not replacing the former 60-year-old LPGA Championship in the major line-up, but instead, the new partnership is elevating it.

Members of the PGA’s Ryder Cup task force join to announce Love as captain

Davis Love was officially named the U.S Ryder Cup captain at a media conference at the PGA of America’s headquarters on Tuesday at PGA National, site of this week’s Honda Classic. Six members of the PGA’s Ryder Cup task force were present for the announcement, including PGA CEO Pete Bavacqua, president Derek Sprague, vice president Paul Levy, Phil Mickelson, Tom Lehman Rickie Fowler, and of course, Love. The PGA also revealed changes to the captain selection process and qualifying system for U.S. players.
