The Back9Network, a new golf and lifestyle focused multimedia network, made its official launch at the 2012 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando recently. Which was a huge success. The team generated massive buzz and intrigue across the industry from CEOs to celebs. The Back9 is about inclusion and breaking away from golf’s rep of “stuffed shirts trying to keep people out,” after all.

TRUE Linkswear spikeless golf shoes keep you closer to the ground and actually provide better balance, according to PGA Tour player Ryan Moore, who’s been sporting the kicks since last May when he signed an endorsement deal that also made him part-owner of the company. Meanwhile, the guys manning the TRUE booth at last week’s PGA Show couldn’t keep the super-comfortable shoes on the shelves due to the high demand.

Just swinging by the Travis Mathew Camper Van

Friday at the PGA Merchandise Show was much more productive than Thursday. I put on my game face and sketched out a tentative to-do list. Basically, I came to terms with the fact that I couldn’t see and/or do everything (this may be hard to believe, but I have the tendency to overextend myself). I figured the best way to show you guys what I saw is through pictures (I certainly apologize for the poor quality, but I went all amateur hour and used my phone, with the exception of several, like the one above, which is courtesy of Derek from 72strokes.com). Here we go!

Artist David O'Keefe's rendition of "Bushwood"

Writer Tony Dear is contributing to WUP at the 2011 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Florida, because there’s too much golf crap for just one person to cover. Check out his adventures at the convention center on Friday.

Friday at the PGA Show is a good deal quieter than Thursday. Gone is the initial, feverish excitement that fueled everyone’s first trip ’round the Orange County Convention Center, and the reality of having to do some actual work and making sound decisions, whether buying or selling, sets in.

I caught up with LPGA player Paige Mackenzie, who recently signed an endorsement deal with Cleveland Golf, at the PGA Merchandise Show on Friday. Paige gives us an impromptu mini-tour of the Cleveland booth and talks about what’s in her bag.

(I now realize that I asked her a question after she already answered it. My bad. It’s tough to keep things straight amidst the chaos!)

Tony is pleased to receive some free Titleist swag

Writer Tony Dear is contributing to WUP at the 2011 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Florida, because there’s too much golf crap for just one person to cover. Check out his adventures at the convention center on Thursday.

After waiting 30 minutes for an I-Ride Trolley to take me the three miles down International Drive to the OCCC, I eventually arrived for Titleist’s annual presentation in the Linda Chapin Auditorium two minutes before it finished. On the way out I, and the other thousand or so people who heard how Titleist is a company committed to ‘Partnership’, was handed a box of the new Pro-V1s by one of the men in white coats. I considered this a very advantageous ball:minute ratio. The day is off to a good start.

Um, because there isn't enough white in golf already? (Joking.)

I’m a tad overwhelmed at the PGA Merchandise Show, my first one ever, and apparently, it used to be even larger. Actually, the whole thing is kinda scary. I was told I should have a game plan before heading into the Convention Center. Naturally, I didn’t. Instead I met up with my “Happy Hour” co-host Jess Marksbury (oh, I think there’s a new episode posted over at TourPlayers.com) and let her lead the way…

Range on Demo Day: the hundreds of exhibitors around the edge -- there were just as many on the other side, too!

Writer Tony Dear is reporting from the 2011 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Florida.

At some point it’s inevitable you’re actually going to see, hold and try some new equipment at the PGA Merchandise Show and so it was today. After chatting with Ed Several, watching Peter Jacobsen and Nico Bollini do their thing, grabbing a coffee and making a few phone calls, I actually went in search of some interesting new gear; not stuff that represented a small upgrade on last season’s model, you understand, but something that made me go: “What on Earth is that; does it actually work; I’ve not seen that before, and most importantly; wow, that looks cool.”
I did find a couple of things of note.

Peter Jacobsen entertaining the crowd at Demo Day

Writer Tony Dear is reporting from the 2011 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Florida.

Former PGA Tour player, Ryder Cupper and present day entertainer, Peter Jacobsen, had them rolling in the aisles (well, the seats put up in the covered hitting area on the range at Orange County National GC) this morning when, together with trick shot artist Nico Bollini, he treated Demo Day attendees to a few impersonations from his impressive repertoire.
