ernie els phil mickelson 100th major

First things first, in the above photo, you can’t see that Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els are both wearing shorts. I’ve seen Els in shorts and I’m OK with it. I think today was the first time seeing Phil in them… and I just…it’s weird.

It was both a quiet and major news day on Tuesday at the PGA Championship. On a personal note (because I’m sure you care), I feel really behind because I was initially supposed to arrive on Sunday afternoon and then I pushed it back to Monday, but then because of inclement weather in the NYC area, flights were all delayed or canceled, so I didn’t get in until Tuesday afternoon (and my luggage didn’t arrive) — yep, off to a blazing good start! But all things considered, I can’t complain.

KPMG Women's PGA Champ Media Day

Next month’s KPMG Women’s PGA Championship was officially introduced on Monday at Westchester Country Club, the site of the inaugural event. Well, sort of. As organizers and executives from all parties, KPMG, the LPGA, and PGA of America, pointed out, this tournament is not replacing the former 60-year-old LPGA Championship in the major line-up, but instead, the new partnership is elevating it.

Members of the PGA’s Ryder Cup task force join to announce Love as captain

Davis Love was officially named the U.S Ryder Cup captain at a media conference at the PGA of America’s headquarters on Tuesday at PGA National, site of this week’s Honda Classic. Six members of the PGA’s Ryder Cup task force were present for the announcement, including PGA CEO Pete Bavacqua, president Derek Sprague, vice president Paul Levy, Phil Mickelson, Tom Lehman Rickie Fowler, and of course, Love. The PGA also revealed changes to the captain selection process and qualifying system for U.S. players.

Ted Bishop joined Golf Channel’s Gary Williams on Morning Drive on Tuesday in his first television interview since making his insensitive gender-based remarks last week on two of his social media outlets, and thus, resulting in his swift removal as president of the PGA of America.

In his Twitter and Facebook posts, Bishop was attempting to defend Ryder Cup captains Tom Watson and Nick Faldo in response to excerpts from Ian Poulter’s new book, “No Limits,” where the outspoken Englishmen (God forbid!) criticized two of the legends in the game. The former PGA president listed Watson and Faldo’s major wins, along with their Ryder Cup records, and then he called Poulter a “Lil Girl” on Twitter and expanded on those thoughts on Facebook, writing, “Sounds like a little girl squealing during recess.”

In the interview with Golf Channel, Bishop explained the background behind his postings and expressed regret over the ensuing consequences.

PGA of America president Ted Bishop has been removed from office. Bishop was given the option to announce his resignation and chose to accept that route, according to GolfChannel.com’s sources. He was scheduled to step down from office on November 22, with vice president Derek Sprague to take his place as the incoming president.

Task force, who you gonna call?

Task force, who you gonna call?

The PGA of America is infamous for forming its “task forces.” We’re not quite sure what they exactly accomplish yet, rather than getting a group of people together to chat and charging the expenses to the PGA. The task force will reportedly examine the U.S. Ryder Cup process — from how the captains and players are selected to how the team prepares for the matches. Hopefully this one will get the American Ryder Cup team back on track after the U.S. has fallen to Europe in eight of the last 10 biennial dogfights against the two continents.

Ryder Cup + PGA + NBC Sports

The PGA of America and NBC Sports revealed a massive deal on Thursday, with the most newsworthy component being the extension of Golf Channel/NBC receiving the TV rights of the Ryder Cup through 2030.

Naturally, PGA of America President Ted Bishop pointed out that they wanted to respect the PGA Tour and its big event, the Presidents Cup, so they waited until the following week to make their announcement (unlike the USGA during the PGA Championship in August when they unveiled the Fox deal).
