Davis Love III can redeem himself at the 2016 Ryder Cup when he’ll get his second chance to lead the American squad to a victory. Love will be the next captain of the U.S. Ryder Cup team, according to a report by Golf Channel insider Tim Rosaforte.
The PGA of America is infamous for forming its “task forces.” We’re not quite sure what they exactly accomplish yet, rather than getting a group of people together to chat and charging the expenses to the PGA. The task force will reportedly examine the U.S. Ryder Cup process — from how the captains and players are selected to how the team prepares for the matches. Hopefully this one will get the American Ryder Cup team back on track after the U.S. has fallen to Europe in eight of the last 10 biennial dogfights against the two continents.
Just over a week removed from the U.S. team’s eighth loss to Europe in the past 10 Ryder Cups, the PGA of America is already in the process of a major overhaul to its current system. PGA of America President Ted Bishop is planning to create a task force dedicated to examine the Ryder Cup structure — from how the captain’s picks are selected to the qualification of the 12 team members and even the schedule of events during the matches — according to GolfChannel.com’s Rex Hoggard.
Don’t get me wrong, the 12 players on a team hit the shots and make the putts that ultimately determine a win or loss, but the job of the Ryder Cup captain involves more than just picking out uniforms, posing for photo ops, and making decisions from your “gut” — a term American Captain Tom Watson used starting at the glitzy press conference, where he made his somewhat controversial captain’s picks, particularly when it came down to Webb Simpson, who apparently texted his way onto the team.
In response to Ian Poulter’s question, the triumphant ’08 American Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger tweeted on Thursday night:
Hey..@Ianjamespoulter Is it to late to ask a question? I was busy polishing this. http://yfrog.com/n8poexj
And no words necessary for this priceless image (where the above link is directed) — well, actually, Pat Perez’s reaction sums it up appropriately.
Paul Azinger and Nick Price pulled out of this week’s US Senior Open at Sahalee Country Club due to injuries. Azinger has a foot injury while Price has a toe injury. Meanwhile, Tom Pernice Jr. has also withdrawn because he’s playing in the PGA Tour’s Greenbrier Classic instead. (Ouchie!)
