Despite skipping this week’s Barclays, the first of four legs of the PGA Tour’s FedExCup Playoffs, Rory McIlroy can return to the top of the world rankings. Which seems completely bizarre (actually, not really given the system) since McIlroy isn’t teeing it up competitively this week, but that’s the way the OWGR math works out, according to Golf Channel.

Tiger Woods, who hasn’t played competitive golf since early February due to injury to his game and health, is dropping outside of the top 100 in the world rankings for the first time since he entered it after capturing his maiden victory on the PGA Tour in 1996. Yep, it’s been almost 20 years that the former world no. 1 was ranked inside the top 100 golfers on the planet.

Boom goes the dynamite!

Another Sunday. Another thrilling finish on the PGA Tour (which has become the norm early in the 2012 season). So, what happened this time?

Luke Donald overcame a three-shot deficit heading into the final round of the Transitions Championship to fire a five-under 66, 13-under total, and earn a spot in the four-man playoff with Robert Garrigus, Jim Furyk and Sang-Moon Bae. After driving it in the rough on the 18th, the first extra hole, Donald came through in the clutch. He hit a beautiful 7-iron to about 6 feet and then rolled it in for birdie to win his fifth-career PGA Tour event.

Rory McIlroy rolled in a birdie on the 72nd hole of the HSBC Champions, which proved to be a valuable stroke. His tie for fourth in Shanghai boosted him past Lee Westwood in the world rankings from No. 3 to No. 2 this week.

Rory’s pal Graeme McDowell tweeted the above photo of Rory and his tennis superstar girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki showing off their standing.

I guess that’s what you call a power couple!

Tiger: Waaaaah!

Tiger Woods has dropped out of the top 50 in the world rankings for the first time in almost 15 years.

When the new rankings are published tomorrow, Tiger’s streak of 778 consecutive weeks inside the top 50 will end. It’ll be his lowest rank since October 13, 1996, when he was No. 61. Mind you, he only turned pro in late August of that year.

Tiger shakes hands with G-Mac after G-Mac pulled a Tiger at last year's Chevron

Tiger Woods didn’t play in the BMW Championship, which he won two years ago, but he still emerged as a winner. Well, depending on how you see it. Woods, who was No. 47 in the world rankings this week, will drop two spots to No. 49 in the new rankings published Monday.

New World Order

As expected, Tiger Woods dropped out of the top ten for the first time in 14 years. In the latest edition of the world rankings, Woods fell from No. 8 to No. 12. Whoa, right?

Winless in 18 months and major-less since the ’08 US Open, he could continue to plummet further down the list if he doesn’t regain his form this summer.

Tiger: Freefallin' down the OWGR

Tiger Woods has fallen to eighth in the world golf rankings after being surpassed by England’s Paul Casey. Although Casey missed the cut at last week’s Wells Fargo Championship, he ascended to the seventh spot in the ranking released on Monday. Tiger missed the event due to a mild sprain to his left knee (the one that’s endured four surgeries) and a sore Achilles tendon, which he endured during the third round of last month’s Masters.
