As Alex Noren prepared to hit a five-footer for eagle on the par-5 18th at Wentworth, his hands were shaking so much that he couldn’t even line up the putt. He managed to get a hold of his nerves and gently stroked the delicate downhill curling left-to-right putt — center cup all the way.

Noren fired a scorching ten-under 62 to set a new course record at Wentworth. He posted a tournament total of 11-under to take the lead at the BMW PGA Championship, the European Tour’s flagship event, separating him from the pack at nine-under, most of whom had most of the back nine left to play. The waiting game began and the torrential showers followed shortly thereafter.

European Tour awkward reporter

And we thought it couldn’t  be done — a truly, pee-in-your pants-laughing, hilarious golf…well, anything. In the history of the game. No joke. I can’t stop laughing and tears are streaming down my face! In a good way for a change this week! But I wasn’t expecting anything less. It’s quite a feat to create a video that crosses over to non-golf industry people — I’m fairly certain anyone, who doesn’t know or watch or like golf, will be LMAOLOLZ.

Wait, what am I talking about? Well, it’s the video we’ve all been waiting for…since the pro-am on Wednesday at the Abu Dhabi Championship. At least those of us who saw and/or heard the anecdotes from just about every player, manager, media person, insider on the European Tour.

I am about to throw both my iPhone and Macbook against the wall or out of a moving car. Talk about a bad stretch to have all your technology start acting up. But this is not the time and place for me to vent about my #firstworldproblems. Well, I just kind of did. Again, I digress.

Alright, this is going to be a ton of information that I’ll be throwing out at you, but I wanted to get it all out there. I mean, I didn’t spend 12-14 hours a day at Baltusrol in the blistering heat the last three days to not share the info I collected — I’ve done plenty of that already this year! Let’s get this golf geek party started.

Nicolas Colsaerts finished third in the PGA Long Drive Competition on Tuesday with a measly 341-yard tee shot on the first hole at Baltusrol GC. He was bested by Rory McIlroy (345 yards) and Byeong Hun An (347 yards).

It was no surprise to see the big-hitting Belgian’s name near the top of the Long Drive leaderboard. In fact, it was more mind-blowing that he *only* hit it 341 yards and didn’t manage to surpass McIlroy.

By Stephanie Wei under European PGA Tour

In case you missed the live interviews on Periscope — since it was dark-o-clock in the U.S. — I spoke with Nicolas Colsaerts, Luke Donald, Matteo Manassero and Mikko Ilonen this morning at Wentworth, the site of the European Tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship. (Don’t worry, I asked if I could use the live-streaming app in advance and received permission from the European Tour, which has different media regulations, and I’m pretty much allowed to Periscope until the cows come home from Monday-Wednesday.)

First, let’s check out my chat with the legendary Nicolas Colsaerts:

As loyal readers know — hi, mom! — By the Numbers is generally a look back on the previous week’s tournament, but with all due respect to Harris English, who I hear is a great guy, it’s U.S. OPEN WEEK! With that in mind, this week’s column is going to look at some of the regular stats and some different ones that will come in play at Merion Golf Club.

Hopefully, this will help with your office pools and Fantasy Golf – or just make you sound really smart when you’re hanging out on your couch alone or with your friends, family and/or significant others. (Note: The following is not a comprehensive list of stats that will be important — others, such as driving accuracy and putting, will also play a factor.)

Hey dude, you going to America? Yeah? Cool, me too, dude.

It seems like just a few years ago the European Tour was gaining momentum in its claim for star power that rivaled the U.S. PGA Tour. Wait, it was!

With the economic downturn in Europe and loss of sponsors, many of its finest players have decided to jump ship and base themselves in America (while still maintaining their European Tour membership but keeping the number of starts at the bare minimum). With the PGA Tour boasting 28 of the top 30 players in world rankings in the upcoming 2013 season, the U.S. defection movement is now complete, wouldn’t you say?
