The road back to the winner’s circle

Almost three years ago, J.B. Holmes was diagnosed with Chiara malformations in his brain and discovered he needed surgery to remove the pressure that was causing vertigo-like symptoms. He had his first — yes, that’s right — brain surgery in September 2011.

He keeps the piece of his skull that was removed in his closet. Now, he might put it in the trophy he won on Sunday at Quail Hollow Club.

Phrill!

Phil Mickelson got off to a fast start on the front nine during the third round of the Wells Fargo Championship and didn’t really let up on his way to a career-best nine-under, 63, at Quail Hollow Club. Mickelson, whose putter went cold on Friday, found his game on moving day to surge up the leaderboard, with a 54-hole total of 11-under.

Cabrera starts second-round with lead, ends with share of it.

Angel Cabrera posted a second consecutive round in the 60s at Quail Hollow Club to take a share of the lead at the Wells Fargo Championship heading into the weekend. The Argentinian fired a three-under 69 to follow his first-round six-under 66, a two-day total of nine-under.

De Jonge goes low Friday

After posting an eight-over 80 on Thursday at Quail Hollow Club, Brendon de Jonge figured he’d be going home early — which, at least, wouldn’t be far since he resides in Charlotte, where the Wells Fargo Championship is held. Then, de Jonge caught fire on Friday, shooting a 10-under 62 to tie the course record that Rory McIlroy set in the final round in 2010 when he went on to win.

Kyle Stanley, I presume?

The third round of the Farmers Insurance Open is rattling towards its conclusion and, as things currently stand, Kyle Stanley enjoys a three-shot lead over the unheralded/anonymous Martin Flores and four over Bill Haas and Brandt Snedeker.
