Tiger in the hunt

Tiger in the hunt

The greens at Muirfield were watered on Thursday night, so they were softer on Friday morning for the second round of the Open, but grew progressively firmer and faster throughout the day, making it difficult to adjust at times for the pros. The wind also switched directions, making the course play quite differently.

Woods, who shot two-under 69 in the first round after a shaky start, battled his way to an even-par 71. Once again, he put quite a bit of pressure on his putting, which, for the most part, was solid.

Tiger Woods, y'all

Tiger golfs his ball well

After hooking his opening tee shot into the thick rough at Muirfield, Tiger Woods hit a provisional ball on the first hole of the Open Championship on Thursday afternoon. He also pulled his provisional, but not as wide left, but with the aid of marshals and fans, Woods found his first ball and took an unplayable. Though he scrambled for a bogey, it wasn’t exactly an ideal start and it made you think, “Ugh, here we go again!”

Scene of the deception: the links at Ballybunion.

Traditionally spared the gaudiest excesses of tabloid culture, Ireland tends to approach celebrity with a proud, studied ambivalence.

We know who you are and reserve the right to gossip about you, but our self-regard and crippling sense of awkwardness will usually keep us at arm’s length.

O'Meara turns back the clock

54-year-old Mark O’Meara fired a six-under 66 at TPC Sawgrass on Thursday. And no, he wasn’t playing in the Senior Players Championship — he’s keeping up with the kids this week. O’Meara credits his incredible round to his fantastic putting. He only needed 24 putts. He’s currently tied for third and two shots behind first-round leader Nick Watney, who fired a blistering 64. Naturally, during O’Meara’s presser, he was asked about his good friend and former-Orlando neighbor Tiger Woods’ withdrawing after nine holes. O’Meara, who says Tiger seems “extremely happy,” was shocked when he heard the news.

Technically, Mark O’Meara paired up with Nick Price to win the Legends of Golf in April. But the 53-year-old O’Meara broke through for his first individual win on the Champions Tour today, beating Michael Allen on the opening playoff hole after sinking a four-footer for par.

And it wasn’t just any tournament. It was the last Champions Tour major of the year: the Senior Players Championship.

“It’s a thrill. It’s been a long time coming,” O’Meara said of his first individual win since the Dubai Desert Classic in 2004. “This is a demanding course. It’s a class field. It’s a senior major championship. So I feel like I hit the jackpot.”
