To be perfectly clear, this isn’t necessarily about politics. I repeat, THIS IS NOT ABOUT POLITICS. This is not about whether you lean left or right on the political spectrum, or if you’re a registered Democrat or Republican — Donald Trump has switched parties in various points of his life (which, of course, isn’t that unusual). This is not whether you support the GOP healthcare bill or if you believe in universal healthcare. For what it’s worth, I’m an Independent.

Mind you, this conversation could’ve been avoided had the President divested from his company and real estate properties, like all individuals in public office, including Presidents have in the past and are supposed to. Trump broke from this long-standing tradition and still owns the buildings and golf courses (which is arguably using the office of the President to enrich himself and bring business to his properties), so spare me the “stick to golf” comments — I’m just following the example set from the top.

Before some of you get all fired up over my use of “legend” and “John Daly” in the same sentence, relax. I don’t mean it in the way that I would when I’m referring to Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, etc. But, Daly is indeed a “legend’ in his own right. Well, maybe “folk hero” is more accurate, but the guy did win two majors, including the 1995 Open Championship at St Andrews (aside: I love hearing stories from reporters that were present for the trophy presentation and ensuing celebration).

Daly is like golf’s Everyman in a sport that’s known for its rigid, uptight and exclusionary practices. So, happy 50th birthday, John Daly!

John-Daly

Just days after keeling over on the 18th hole during an outing at Deerfield Country Club in Mississippi due to what was diagnosed as a collapsed lung, John Daly was singing his heart out with Mark Bryan from Hootie and the Blowfish and Patrick Davis in Myrtle Beach on Tuesday night.

The song of choice? “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” naturally.

Kirk eyes his third victory Kirk eyes his third victory[/caption]

Despite struggling with his driver off the tee, Chris Kirk shot a five-under 65 to take a one-shot lead over fellow University of Georgia alumnus Harris English and PGA Tour rookie Will Wilcox heading into the final round of the Sony Open.

Kirk made the most out of his round on Saturday at Waialae Country Club, which included a nine-footer for birdie on no. 18 to narrowly separate him from the clustered leaderboard. There are 26 players within five shots of the lead.

W for Waialae

W for Waialae

Conditions were ideal on Thursday at Waialae Country Club to kick off the opening round of the Sony Open, the PGA Tour’s first full-field event of the year (not season anymore). The sun was out in full force and the wind was mostly calm. Most of the lower scores came from the morning wave, per usual — don’t worry, they switch on Friday, so the other half of the field will be able to get after it.

John Daly hurts drinking arm

John Daly hurts drinking arm

John Daly just can’t seem to get a break. It’s always something — whether it’s his run-ins with the law, gambling, drinking problem, or injuries to his shoulder, hamstring, big toe, etc. Daly, the people’s champion, withdrew from the Greenbrier Classic last Friday — which isn’t an uncommon occurrence — citing an elbow injury.

He announced on Twitter that he needed elbow surgery, which would sideline him for three-four months (see tweet below), and on Monday, he officially withdrew from the Open Championship.

John Daly has some words of wisdom for Vijay Singh, who filed a lawsuit against the PGA Tour on Wednesday. Daly tweeted, “VJ don’t do this horrible advice you got off take it from me not worth it #friendlyadvice.”

Daly would know. In 2007 the two-time major champion filed a lawsuit against a number of parties, including the PGA Tour. That didn’t end so well.

John Daly always makes things interesting

John Daly posted a score of 10 or higher on one hole for the 15th time at the Tampa Bay Championship on Friday. There’s no official record of this compelling stat (but there should be, hint hint!), but to the media’s knowledge, Daly probably ranks first in this category.

Daly carded a sextuple-bogey 10 on the par-4 third hole at Innisbrook in the second round. Golf Channel’s Jason Sobel recounts the action:
