Round one of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Westchester Country Club is in the books, and the afternoon wave certainly lit up the golf course, with Jenny Shin posting an impressive bogey-free seven-under 66 to take the lead.

“I started the round feeling a little uncertain,” said Shin. “I didn’t know how I was going to play, I really didn’t know. I talked to my psychologist last night about how I was freaking out for this round, so I tried to play as comfortable as I can, just like any other tournament. I tried not to think of it as a major and it turned out great. I had a couple bogey-free rounds last week, so I think I’m on a good run here.”

Ugh, this stinks
Sorry, I’m a little late to the party — I had the flu over the weekend and I was probably more miserable than Tiger Woods hacking up a 79 on Saturday at Torrey Pines to miss the second cut, also known as “MDF.” (When more than 78 players make the 36-hole cut, there’s a secondary cut following the third round that whittles the field down to top 70 and ties for the final round.)

Rory McIlroy wasn’t the only one who had a pretty good weekend in South Korea. So did Michelle Wie, who fired a six-under 66, the lowest in the final round, to surge to T3 at the LPGA’s KEB-HanaBank Championship.

While Wie snared a share of the lead on the back nine on Sunday, she posted her score earlier than the leaders and then played the nail-biting waiting game. Turned out Amy Yang and Hee Kyung Seo both birdied the 18th and Yang beat Seo in a playoff.

The Spaniards FTW! (Photo via Facebook)

The Spaniards FTW!

For the second day in row, the Solheim Cup was filled with drama and controversy, not to mention painful — and embarrassing — rulings that unnecessarily lasted nearly 30 minutes (maybe longer, but I fell asleep around the 22nd minute) over a drop from a hazard.

Korda and Pressel

Korda and Pressel celebrate

Partnered with Morgan Pressel in the Friday morning’s foursomes (alternate shot) matches, Solheim Cup rookie Jessica Korda hit her opening drive, which found the left rough. As she was walking up the fairway, she started eating a banana, and just after Pressel struck the approach shot, Korda basically lost her breakfast, according to Golfweek’s Julie Williams:

Korda and her former caddie

Talk about drama! — apparently Jessica Korda and her now-former caddie, Jason Gilroyed, had irreconcilable differences because after her front nine in the third round of the U.S. Women’s Open, she fired him and replaced him with her boyfriend Johnny DelPrete, according to a tweet from Golf Channel’s Kelly Tilghman.

Natalie Gulbis looking pretty in pink!

With mild conditions and an extremely benevolent setup by the USGA — words you never thought you’d hear! — Sebonack was for the taking in the first round of the U.S. Women’s Open, which certainly didn’t make it “easy,” either. Without further ado (and because I’m starving), Thursday’s top five…
