For most of Tuesday, Rory McIlroy’s name stood boldly apart from the rest of the competitors on the leaderboard for the PGA Long Drive Championship next to the first tee. McIlroy wasn’t just leading the field all morning after striping his drive 345 yards on the opening hole at Baltusrol’s Lower Course — he was dominating it, with Sergio Garcia lagging behind at 319 yards (yep, 26 yards back).

Naturally, as the day went on, conditions became firmer (though they were still quite soft compared to a day earlier after heavy rains came through Monday evening) and the wind picked up — helping on the first hole — and more names started threatening McIlroy’s massive lead.

It wouldn’t be a major championship with Dustin Johnson in contention if there weren’t some type of ridiculous drama involved — whether it was trying to chip left-handed and imploding in the final round to lose a three-shot lead (2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach), grounding his club on the 72nd hole in the controversial bunker-not-a-bunker debacle (2010 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits), hitting a 4-iron out-of-bounds coming down the stretch (2011 Open Championship at Royal St Georges), three-putting from 12 feet on the 72nd hole on “bumpy” greens to miss out on an 18-hole playoff against Jordan Spieth (2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay), and posting two scores over par after holding the 36-hole lead (2015 Open Championship at St Andrews).

At the end of regulation on Sunday afternoon at The Memorial, there were two players left standing at 15-under, Will McGirt and Jon Curran, who are relative unknowns to the average fan and both searching for their first victory on the PGA Tour. Right behind them were two big-hitting stars, Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy, but they were unable to catch the two players who had taken very different paths than they took en route to the big leagues.

Maybe a DJ-Rory playoff would have been more appealing to the masses, but seriously, who doesn’t love a pair of Cinderella stories facing off in extra holes at Muirfield Village, the course that tournament host Jack Nicklaus built? (I’m a sucker for the underdog, though.)

World no. 1 and local resident Jason Day is well aware of his poor record at The Memorial Tournament, held at his home course Muirfield Village Golf Club. Before he even teed off, first-round leader Dustin Johnson had already posted an eight-under 64, so Day knew he had a tough act to follow.

As you may have seen by now — I am fully aware that this came out on Sunday and I saw it then, but just forgot to post it — Jack Nicklaus sat down with Jim Axelrod of CBS News and talked about his business relationship with the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. Nicklaus spoke highly for Trump and even said he’ll vote for him if he’s on the ballot this fall.

This came as no surprise. I’ve only known Nicklaus to speak well of Trump. In fact, I’m not sure if I’ve ever heard him deliver so many compliments about anyone else. (That’s probably not true, but what stood out to me during my 2013 interview with Nicklaus were his accolades for Trump, and by that token, the same can be said about Trump on himself).

The buzz all last week in golf was around #SB2K16, where Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas and Smylie Kaufman took a bro’d-out vacation to Bakers Bay in the Bahamas. And it looked like a lot of friggin’ fun. Who else was addicted to Thomas and Fowler’s constant documentation of the trip via SnapChat, and had major FOMO? <<both hands raised>> (See photos below)

I commend the guys for letting loose and enjoying themselves, and anyone who thinks otherwise needs to pull that stick out of their behind.

Although #SB2K16 had to come to an end, it might not be too soon to start thinking about #SB2K17. Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus *both* want in on the festivities next year.

Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate that Tiger Woods has a communications team writing corporate updates for him on his website, especially since he’s been on the sidelines — it reminds us that he’s still alive and thinking of us (okay, maybe not really). But, holy crap, today’s post seems more boring than usual and it really doesn’t reveal anything we already didn’t know

US Ryder Cup potentials

Well, that’s certainly a bit of a motley crew. Jack Nicklaus and his wife Barbara hosted a dinner for potential U.S. Ryder Cup team members on Thursday night at their home in North Palm Beach — not far from this week’s Honda Classic.

While Tiger Woods has been playing his cards close to his chest as to when he’ll make his next start after finishing T17 at the Masters, one place he’ll apparently be playing is the Memorial Tournament, which Jack Nicklaus hosts at the end of May

Nicklaus, who spoke Wednesday during a fundraising event at Ohio State, said that he and Woods had a “long, long talk” at Augusta National, where they discussed various topics.
