Sh*t happens

In the last few months of his rookie season, Bobby Gates caught a streak of bad luck and it seemed like everything that could go wrong, did. Fortunately, his luck changed just in time for PGA Tour Q-school finals, where he came back from a disappointing fifth round one-over 73 to shoot six-under 66 in the sixth to climb to a tie for third at PGA West on Monday and retained full status for the 2012 season.

Best of all, Gates doesn’t have to deal with being that guy — you know, the one who was $1,431 short of finishing in the top 125 on the money list to avoid the dreaded return to Q-school.

Rory McIlroy rolled in a birdie on the 72nd hole of the HSBC Champions, which proved to be a valuable stroke. His tie for fourth in Shanghai boosted him past Lee Westwood in the world rankings from No. 3 to No. 2 this week.

Rory’s pal Graeme McDowell tweeted the above photo of Rory and his tennis superstar girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki showing off their standing.

I guess that’s what you call a power couple!

Remember me? I won the PGA Championship last year and was No. 1 in the world.

Martin Kaymer played fantastic golf on Sunday in Shanghai — which has unfortunately been somewhat overshadowed by the ongoing controversy over Steve Williams’ comment directed at ex-boss Tiger Woods — and it deserves a tip of the cap. Kaymer rallied from a five-shot deficit, making nine birdies in his last 12 holes to win by three strokes.

It was a joke, guys!

Following the third round of the HSBC Champions, a day after the caddie awards dinner where Steve Williams made the controversial comment directed at former boss Tiger Woods in his acceptance speech, Adam Scott said he disagreed with those who thought he should sack Williams and suggested the remark was taken out of context.

Oh, the good ol' days...

Probably not long after he woke up to dozens of text messages telling him to check out the not-so-flattering headlines plastered across the interwebs, Steve William posted an apology statement on his website Friday morning (a bit quicker than the last time — man, Adam Scott’s PR/crisis management team have had their hands full recently):

Stevie holds court

Steve Williams can’t manage to censor himself when speaking in group settings, particularly about former boss Tiger Woods. Last night at the “caddie awards” dinner in Shanghai, Williams had been invited up to the stage after winning “best celebration” of the year — with reference to his infamous post-victory speech(es) at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational when he took the spotlight away from his current player and employer Adam Scott.

Asked to explain the purpose of the celebration, Williams replied, “‘It was my aim to shove it right up that black a**ehole,’ according to the Daily Mail‘s Derek Lawrenson.

Take that, Freddie, Tiger, Bill, Luke, Webb, etc.!

PGA champion Keegan Bradley is letting his play speak for itself — which is certainly causing more grief for Presidents Cup captain Fred Couples, who passed on the rookie as one of his wildcard picks, and perhaps Luke Donald, who thought he had the Player of the Year award wrapped up after coming in the clutch with his dramatic victory at Disney to claim the PGA Tour money title.

Keegan fired a bogey-free seven-under 65 in the first round of the WGC-HSBC Champions, held in Shanghai, to take a two-shot lead over Fredrik Jacobson and Bo Van Pelt (who won by six shots last week in Malaysia).

McIlroy looking for new horizon...

Rory McIlroy couldn’t believe the massive reaction to his recent split with now former agent Chubby Chandler and ISM. It’s not uncommon for players and managers to break up and usually no one notices. But since the 22-year-old won the U.S. Open by a decisive eight strokes and due to Chubby’s high profile, it was big news. (After all, in the new world order Rory breaking a nail might make headlines.)

Dude, who are you voting for Player of the Year?

Congrats, Luke, for winning at Disney and the money title! Oh, wait. Sorry, Luke, the PGA Tour season isn’t actually over yet. Even though you were told it was and you put on a ridiculously clutch performance on Sunday to gain an edge in the Player of the Year race, there’s actually another tournament left: The HSBC Champions, a World Golf Championship event, in Shanghai, China, next week, which counts as an official PGA Tour event if a Tour player wins it.

In a Tiger first, Woods sees opportunity in a land far, far away from Las Vegas

A-ha! I knew there was an ulterior motive when Tiger Woods was going out of his way to bond with the Chinese fans last week at the HSBC Champions. Kidding! Reuters is reporting that Tiger is shopping the Chinese market to replace the big-name sponsors, such as Gatorade, Gillette, Accenture and AT&T, that dumped him following his sex scandal.  Well, there are 1.3 billion reasons why China is a great place for that.

Oh, there’s also a key cultural component that plays to Woods’ advantage.
