As you may recall, I was in China a few weeks ago covering The Match at Mission Hills Haikou Resort — which is located on Hainan Island, often dubbed the “Hawaii of the East” — between world no. 1 Tiger Woods and “former world no. 1” Rory McIlroy.

I was also fortunate enough to experience all that the impressive five-star resort, which boasts 10 unique golf courses, 220 volcanic mineral spring pools, Asia’s largest spa and an array of restaurants, had to offer, including several rounds of golf — though I wished I had been able to play more than that.

IMPACT!

Apologies for the delay in posting this write-up on The Match at Mission Hills between Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods that happened on Monday, which Rory ended up besting Tiger by a shot — not that it mattered since they were both getting a payday of over a million dollars for just showing up.

First of all, much of the reason I traveled all the way to China was to experience the golf and the crowds at the tournaments. Obviously, the Match was an exhibition, so the rules and regulations for the fans were much looser, to say the least, than they will be at this week’s HSBC Champions, which I expect will be more organized and contained. Plus, Tiger isn’t playing there and his presence at Mission Hills is mostly why the throngs were going so nuts — they love “Lao Hu” (Chinese for “Tiger”).

Instead of sneaking through the back entrance of the hotel, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy went through the front door for a few photo ops. (Naturally, I took a picture of hotel guests and “Lao Hu” fans snapping shots.) Considering both are being paid several million for basically just showing up and pegging it with their pal, this wasn’t too much to ask. Hooray.

The world no. 1 and former world no. 1 are excited to play a friendly game of golf on Monday afternoon — as they often do in South Florida — which I’ll be covering live via TwitterInstagram and Facebook, etc. And no, The Match is not being televised live in the U.S., so you should be following me because most of you know how much I enjoy taking behind-the-scenes videos and pictures.

Tiger vs. Rory, Part 2

Tiger vs. Rory, Part 2

As I’m in line boarding my flight to Shanghai, I realized I hadn’t put a note up here about my plans — while I have mentioned it on Twitter, but not everyone does social media — and I probably should share with you guys!

I’m heading to China for the next two and a half weeks…to exploit my Chinese-ness and Mandarin-speaking skills. JUST KIDDING.

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy will meet again in “The Match at Mission Hills,” an 18-hole exhibition match, on October 28 at the Blackstone Course at the Mission Hills Resort in Hainan Island.

Last year, Rory beat Tiger by one shot. Reportedly, Woods received a $2 million appearance fee, while McIlroy took home $1 million.

The best part of the match? The players will be mic’d up. It’ll stream live on YouTube…everywhere except the United States and Canada.
