Phil Mickelson, who posted a one-under 69 in the first round, got off to yet another slow start at Gullane GC in the second round of the Scottish Open. After back-to-back bogeys on nos. 11 and 12 to move outside the cut line, Mickelson rallied, hitting a perfect 9-iron to about 10 feet on no. 14 and holed the putt. He went on to make three consecutive birdies and posted a two-under 68 for a three-under total to move safely inside the cut line.
Despite the somewhat favorable outcome, Mickelson sounded almost astounded that he made the cut because he putted so poorly. He needed 28 putts on Thursday and 30 on Friday.
