The buzz all last week in golf was around #SB2K16, where Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas and Smylie Kaufman took a bro’d-out vacation to Bakers Bay in the Bahamas. And it looked like a lot of friggin’ fun. Who else was addicted to Thomas and Fowler’s constant documentation of the trip via SnapChat, and had major FOMO? <<both hands raised>> (See photos below)

I commend the guys for letting loose and enjoying themselves, and anyone who thinks otherwise needs to pull that stick out of their behind.

Although #SB2K16 had to come to an end, it might not be too soon to start thinking about #SB2K17. Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus *both* want in on the festivities next year.

Gary Player was asked a simple question this morning on Golf Channel’s Morning Drive: “Good morning, Mr. Player, how are you?” What followed included a six-minute diatribe by the former nine-time major championship winner, harping on Chambers Bay and its architect, Robert Trent Jones Jr.

“I am standing at the most beautiful state in the world,” said Player. “[But] this has been the most unpleasant golf tournament that I’ve seen in my life.”

Golf lost a giant on Saturday when Billy Casper, a two-time U.S. Open champion, Masters winner, and one of the most prolific winners on the PGA Tour, passed away at the age of 83 at his home in Springville, Utah. According to his company Billy Casper Golf, the golfing legend died after enduring a heart attack and he had several health setbacks after fainting at the Masters last April.

The morning after the Open Championship, a bleary-eyed Rickie Fowler walked up to the patio outside the Ryder Cup Room at Wentworth Golf Club, sipping on a cup of coffee. Fowler, who had just finished runner-up at Hoylake about 12 hours earlier, greeted Gary Player, the tournament host, and completed with his media gauntlet with ease.

Woods meets Mandela for the first time in ’98

The world is mourning the death of the beloved former South African President Nelson Mandela. Even Tiger Woods, who hasn’t been thrilled with Golf Channel as of late, gave a post-round TV interview to pay tribute to Mandela following the first round of the Northwestern Mutual World Challenge, the tournament he hosts that also benefits his foundation (but denied GC’s request after he shot 62 to take the second-round lead on Friday).

Rory playing the supportive boyfriend

77-year-old South African native Gary Player is undoubtedly a bit old school. A few months ago, he made “controversial” comments on Rory McIlroy’s slumping season, saying he needed to find “the right wife” — unlike tennis player Caroline Wozniacki, Rory’s current girlfriend of two-plus years.

Well, Player, a nine-time major champ, spoke out again in an interview with ESPN’s Sportscenter and didn’t back off from his earlier remarks:

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Arnold Palmer is hungry.

He’s 82 and it’s getting to be almost 8:30 in the morning, which means it’s way past breakfast time. Sure, he’s been having his customary good time on the first hours on the first day at The Masters, but dammit, he’s hungry. The press conference disguised an all-around lovefest for golf’s “Big Three” is dragging on.
