Nerves, passion and strong emotions are already running high amongst the 30 players in the field at East Lake — and no, unfortunately, these feelings aren’t necessarily inspired by the absolutely thrilling Tour Championship after the first round, and the kinda tacky $10-million FedExCup prize to the winner of the year-long contest. It’s all about next week’s Ryder Cup at Hazeltine in Minnesota, just outside Minneapolis. And it’s already getting all Mean Girls!

Jordan Spieth capped an unforgettable season with a four-shot victory at the Tour Championship to fittingly secure the FedEx Cup title. At the rain-soaked East Lake GC, Spieth posted an one-under 69 in the final round to card a tournament total of nine-under.

It was always meant to end this way — with Spieth reclaiming the world no. 1 ranking and winning the FedEx Cup. After all, it was his year/season; he played the best with the most consistency. Jason Day momentarily took over Spieth’s spotlight with his impressive victory at the PGA Championship, along with wins at two of the four playoff events, The Barclays and the BMW Championship, not to mention reaching no. 1 for the first time in his career.

In his pre-tournament press conference at East Lake on Wednesday, Rory McIlroy was asked whether the fact that Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson had failed to qualify for the Tour Championship symbolized a changing of the guard. The world no. 1 replied, “No,” but he pointed out that Woods and Mickelson, the two faces of the game over the last two decades, were simply getting older. He also stated that they were “getting into sort of the last few holes of their career.”

Rory only declared the obvious reality and added that he would be dealing with the same issues that go along with aging in 20 years. Last I checked, Tiger and Phil aren’t 25 anymore. Tiger is indeed injured.

The Eleven Million Dollar Man

Henrik Stenson capped off the best stretch of golf in his career with a victory at the Tour Championship, along with the FedExCup, the biggest paycheck in the game. Stenson entered the final round with a four-shot cushion and played rather conservatively on Sunday, hitting fairway woods and irons off the tee, and just sort of hanging on, though he shot a respectable two-under 68 to a wire-to-wire win by a three-stroke margin over Jordan Spieth and Steve Stricker.

Lindsey in tow with TW’s kids

Before the leaders made the turn, Tiger Woods putted out for par on the 18th and a final-round 67 at the Tour Championship, with his girlfriend Lindsey Vonn and his kids Charlie and Sam watching.

Sam broke free and ran to give her dad a hug.

Nice playing, man

Nice playing, dude

Henrik Stenson shot a solid four-under 66 to take a commanding four-shot lead at the Tour Championship heading into the weekend in the FedExCup finale. The 37-year-old Swede only carried 13 clubs in his bag on Friday. And no, he didn’t break his 4-wood on purpose, like he did with his driver on Monday at the BMW Championship.

While he was warming up on the range, Stenson discovered the face of his 4-wood had caved in, which also made it a non-conforming club — and good thing he left it in his locker because otherwise he would’ve gotten a two-shot penalty or even faced disqualification.

I share some behind-the-scenes nuggets in the video above. I have more info and quotes on the topics I mentioned, but I’ll have to update this post with them later since I’m about to miss the last shuttle to the parking lot!

It was a productive day at East Lake, but for now, here’s a mini Q&A I did with Jordan Spieth (after stalking running him down in the parking lot) — it’s hard to believe he just turned 20 the other month — it’s like he’s 20 going on 35.

Where Oscillate-Gate started...

Where Oscillate-Gate started…

Tiger Woods’ rules infraction last Friday at the BMW Championship remained the most-talked-about-two-shot penalty (since earlier this year at The Masters) on the eve of the Tour Championship. Woods remains adamant that his ball oscillated and didn’t move despite the obvious video evidence, and while this rules violation was caught by a “freelance videographer” for PGA Tour Entertainment, this incident has heightened the discussion about armchair rules officials calling in penalties.

Prior to his chat with the media, Woods met with PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem for about an hour, and though Tiger didn’t divulge many details about their conversation, it’s safe to assume that the main topic was the Tour’s policy on viewers calling in potential rules infractions.
