East Lake GC

When players arrived at East Lake Golf Club this week for the Tour Championship in Atlanta, Ga., they couldn’t help but feel a bit disoriented. (I was certainly confused, initially.) Then, they remembered that tournament officials decided to switch the nines. This year at the FedExCup finale, the field of 30 will tee the hole formerly known as no. 10 and finish on the actual par-5 9th hole.

It’s strange when you first take a walk out there and pass the first hole — but, wait, it is now no. 10 this week — and it definitely does throw you off for a few minutes and then you realize the whole switch with the nines. It doesn’t sound like a big deal and it really isn’t, but it’s still confusing.

American Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson announced his wildcard picks in a glitzy press conference in New York City the day after the conclusion of the Deutsche Bank Championship. Just a day earlier, Billy Horschel had the chance to tie clubhouse leader Chris Kirk with a birdie on the par-5 18th, but he chunked his second shot into the hazard guarding the green (and it was so bad that it almost came up short). That probably didn’t give Watson the best impression of Horschel.

However, less than a week later, Horschel redeemed himself with a two-shot victory over Bubba Watson at the BMW Championship. That likely caught Watson’s attention, but unfortunately, it was a few days too late. Or maybe it wouldn’t have. After all, he didn’t pick Chris Kirk, who played alongside the world no. 1 Rory McIlroy over the weekend at TPC Boston and came out victorious at the DBC. So perhaps it still wouldn’t have been enough to sway Watson (though it should’ve)

When Billy Horschel was younger, he would have strange dreams and they’d come true. For instance, when he was 10 years old, he dreamt he would get hit in the face with a baseball bat. It ended up happening. As he walked up the 18th hole, Horschel told his caddie Micah Fugitt that earlier this year he had a dream he would win the FedExCup.

Rory McIlroy fired the low round of the day at the Tour Championship with a five-under 65 in the second round of the Tour Championship, vaulting him to a tie for second at the halfway mark.

However, he did encounter a bit of drama on the 14th hole that could have killed the momentum he had going on the back nine. After hitting an errant tee shot, McIlroy’s tee ball bounced off a tree and somehow literally landed in a spectator’s pocket.

Jason Day has been plagued with injuries this year, with the most recent occurring last week in Denver at the BMW Championship. Day was forced to withdraw midway through the second round. However, during the first round of the Tour Championship, another member of Team Day had to pull out — Jason’s longtime caddie and coach, Colin Swatton, was forced to put down the bag after seven holes at East Lake on Thursday.

With Rory McIlroy fixed atop the world rankings and Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson failing to qualify for the Tour Championship, it might be symbolic of a changing of the guard in professional golf.

In his pre-tournament press conference on Wednesday morning, McIlroy wouldn’t say that exactly, but he did acknowledge that the two veterans, who have served as the faces of the game for nearly the last two decades, are getting older and more injury prone.

Snedeker, who stayed even-keel all day, finally celebrates after sinking the last putt

Brandt Snedeker entered the final round of the Tour Championship with a share of the 54-hole lead with Justin Rose. In Snedeker’s previous three PGA Tour victories, he overcame deficits of five strokes or more on Sunday to win. There’s always less pressure if you’re teeing off an hour before the leaders and posting a low score early than playing in the final group, where it’s yours to lose.

PLAYOFF FEVER

It’s nearly 8pm here on a Saturday night, so I’m not quite sure what I’m still doing in the media center. Oh, Ryder Cup preview stuff! You guys are all probably watching college football, anyway. To be honest, I haven’t paid much attention to the tournament (FedExCup) within a tournament (Tour Championship), but I certainly will tomorrow when they’re coming down the stretch. Hopefully it’s an exciting finish — which would be a fitting way to kick off the much-anticipated Ryder Cup.
