The men’s and women’s U.S. Open trophies

The stage is set for the USGA’s experiment of hosting both the men’s and women’s U.S. Opens on the same golf course, Pinehurst No. 2, in back-to-back weeks, with, the men, of course, playing their championship first.

On Monday the USGA held its traditional media day to preview the upcoming majors, which will happen during the second and third weeks in June. A couple of intriguing issues were addressed regarding the restoration project, along with the challenges of hosting both Opens.

Former PGA Tour pro and broadcaster extraordinaire  John Maginnes and I talk and babble about all things — well, for the most part — PGA Championship. I was able to lure Maginnes away from the bar to record this, so I owe him a few cold ones. Anyway, I’m sure our drunk jabber was amusing and hopefully, at least a bit entertaining and informative.

(*Update: At the 23 minute, 20 second mark, I ask Maginnes for his non-Tiger picks. Check out the first guy he named…)

New favorite course?

New favorite course?

For all the hype I’d heard leading up to my round at Royal Dornoch, I was a bit skeptical. After all, I’ve played plenty of so-called amazing courses that are pretty forgettable, but Dornoch lived up to the rave reviews and then some.

As most of you know, I was extremely fortunate with the weather while I was in Scotland, so conditions were incredibly firm yet mild, though the wind did pick up a bit intermittently throughout the round, which in some respects made it more enjoyable (read: easier) to play.
