Arnie: Still The King

Just another friendly reminder that these posts will no longer be accompanied with pictures because of PGA Tour media regulations. Sucks, I know. My apologies. I’m looking into a solution, but it’s not going to be overnight. Good new is, I collected some interesting tidbits from inside the ropes on Tuesday and Wednesday (along with following Matteo Manassero and Edoardo Molinari play four holes during a practice round on Monday).

*Update: I had to take down the photo of me and Ellie because apparently I’m violating PGA Tour media rights. Sadly, I’ve just been informed that I can’t post pictures from practice days, either! I’ve explained to the Tour that it’s a disservice to you guys, the readers, who are also PGA Tour fans.

In the spirit of my “Behind the Scenes” post, I’m starting another weekly feature that’s similar. You see, once the tournament starts, I catch some random bits and funny stuff happens that isn’t quite worthy of a standalone post, so I figure the solution is to compile them into a longer one at the end of the week. I’m still trying to think of a meme for the feature — suggestions welcome! — but “Tidbits From Inside the Ropes” will have to do for now. Enjoy!

*I forgot to include an amusing exchange from Wednesday. I was with my colleague Farrell Evans and we ran into Stephen Ames. Farrell says, “Hey Amesy, I saw your coach yesterday.” Ames looks at him with a completely straight (albeit goofy) face and deadpans, “Oh yeah, Tiger’s coach?” Then, as if on cue, we all start cracking up. Later that afternoon, I walked past Sean Foley and Ames, who were headed to the range. I jokingly said to Ames, “Ah, I see you found Tiger’s coach!” He playfully pretended he was going to push me into the practice bunker. He’s a beauty.

Spotted on Monday at the Honda Classic: Cheerleaders!

I’m quoting the great Charlie Sheen, who quoted the great Allen Iverson during an interview with Jeff Rossen of NBC’s Today. Sheen, who has been the talk of the town for, well, being Charlie Sheen, the many loony (yet so absurd, it’s addicting) things he’s been saying lately and suing CBS, was asked if he’d ever missed a day of work. “Not a day that cost anybody any money,” said Sheen, rolling his eyes. “I missed practice. I’m talking about practice, to quote the great Allen Iverson. Practice! Come on, guys, we’re talking about practice.”

Range shot at Riviera

My left foot isn’t happy, but I get stir-crazy sitting in the media center when I should be outside scouring the practice areas and course. So, off I went sans crutches, no less (they’re such a pain when I’m trying to take notes and I look way cooler limping than hobbling, anyway — which, of course, is totally important). First of all, I definitely need a cover story in the place of the actual, lame one. I ran into Hunter Mahan before his press conference and Twitter chat, who suggested I go with something like, “I was diving off the stage at the Bird’s Nest to crowd surf and those drunks dropped me.”

Rickie Fowler, Ricky Barnes and Charley Hoffman jam at the Bird's Nest

I experienced my first trip to the legendary Bird’s Nest on Thursday night. Tons of dudes flocked over to the tent, across the street from TPC Scottsdale, to watch O.A.R. perform. I timidly walked in the VIP area, where the booze flowed freely — well, actually, each person gets 10 drinks, but I found out this policy was very liberal (a bartender punches your pass every time, but most the time, they were nice and only punched it once even if you ordered two drinks). Naturally, I rushed over to the bar and quickly downed a shot of Patron to catch up with the rest of the crowd, since I arrived a little late.
