God.

God.

There are many ways to qualify — excuse me, receive an invitation to the hallowed grounds of Augusta National to play in the Masters Tournament every April. Well, actually, there are 19 different ways, one of which is to finish in the top 50 in the Final Official World Golf Ranking for the previous calendar year.

Well, finally, there are no more golf tournaments with world ranking points this year — that list was published on Monday, and 14 players were added to the 2014 Masters field.

Singh sues

Singh admitted he used deer antler spray and it’s the Tour’s fault?

As expected, TPC Sawgrass was buzzing with the news of Vijay Singh, who filed a lawsuit against the PGA Tour on Wednesday, the day before its flagship event, The Players Championship. It was a surprising turn of events since the Tour had cleared Singh of any wrongdoing last week, and the timing couldn’t have been any better — by better, I mean, worse.

Singh’s complaint purports the Tour’s action resulted in the Hall of Fame golfer to be “humiliated, ashamed, ridiculed, scorned and emotionally distraught.” (You can read the full complaint here.) He also claims the Tour acted unlawfully in the handling of the testing of the deer antler spray that Singh used.

Oh! No!

Oh! No!

Phil Mickelson had command of the lead for most of the weekend, but he faltered when he reached “The Green Mile,” the last three holes at Quail Hollow Club.

All credit to rookie Derek Ernst for grabbing the victory at the Wells Fargo Championship, but he had some help from Mickelson, who let this one slip through his fingers.

Derek Ernst

Ernst and young

Derek Ernst started the week as fourth alternate for the Wells Fargo Championship. After notching his best finish in his rookie year, T47 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, he rented a car to drive to Athens, Georgia, for the Web.Com Tour event.

On the way there, Ernst got a call that he would replace Freddie Jacobson, who had been the fourth player to withdraw.  To avoid a $1,000 drop fee, the 22-year-old UNLV grad had to drive back and return the car to Athens and rent another car to get to Charlotte.

In a strange week at Quail Hollow, where the greens weren’t exactly up to par and the weather felt more like Scotland than Charlotte, it was only fitting that Ernst, who had missed five of seven cuts this season, was crowned the champion.

Lynnsanity!

Lynnsanity!

David Lynn is playing in his first Masters this week and he shot a four-under 68, good enough for second place at the moment. While the 39-year-old Englishman is a rookie on the PGA Tour, he’s not a stranger to leaderboards at majors — though this is only his third one. Last year he was runner-up to Rory McIlroy at the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, which was also his first start in the U.S.

Lynn, who is a must-follow on Twitter, is a funny fellow and quite the prankster. He also enjoys planking and going into his caddie Wayne Husselbery’s iPhone and writing obscene updates on his Facebook (uh, they’re not appropriate for this forum!)

I sat down with Lynn at Doral in March and he told me about some of his best pranks, like the time he changed Ian Poulter’s license plate from “IAN P” to “TAMPAX.” My favorite one might be when he set up a fake dating profile and messed with his caddie, though.

Check out the Q&A and get to know Lynn.

By Stephanie Wei under WUPHangout

I took the stage this evening in the interview room shortly after 54-hole co-leaders Michael Thompson and Luke Guthrie finished their press conferences. The lighting was quite bright, so I’m not sure why I kept looking up — perhaps I’m just drawn to shiny things?

Right when I ended the Hangout, I realized I forgot to mention one of the funny coincidences of the day. After David Lynn outplayed Tiger Woods in the third round, he was immediately whisked away by a drug-testing official.  Lynn, a 39-year-old rookie on the PGA Tour (longtime European Tour player), said today was only the second time he’d ever been tested (and of course, the other time was in Europe), which I thought was interesting considering the discussion lately about the Tour’s non-rigorous drug-testing policy and its lack of transparency.

Before I bid you a good night, in case anyone is interested, here are some quotes from Tiger following his third consecutive even-par 70.

Darren Clarke eventually won by three shots

Darren Clarke overhauled Chris Wood’s four-shot overnight lead this afternoon to claim the Iberdrola Open in Mallorca. Wood, hoping to capitalise on his immense promise and claim his maiden professional victory, was put under some early pressure by Clarke and never regained his momentum, eventually slumping to a six-over 76.
