Women’s Open going to NorCal

The USGA announced on Wednesday that the 2016 U.S. Women’s Open will be held at CordeValle in San Martin, California. It will be the first time the championship is returning to California since 1982 and the first time ever in the northern California area.

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will serve as honorary chair of the tournament.

Tiger in his comfort zone: sidelines at the Stanford/Colorado game

Tiger Woods is well into the final round of the Frys.com Open — you know, trying to get that W! Whoops, he really must have meant “W for weekend” in his Wednesday presser. Woods is seven shots back of leader Briny Baird.

By the way, I was cracking up at some of the comments in the last Tiger post (with all due respect to Baird): “Tiger is getting waxed by Briny Baird!” or “Forget Baird, he’s getting waxed by Roland Thatcher, too!” Yeah, I censored those a little, but you get the point.

A kinda happy-looking Tiger

After kicking off his return to competitive golf with a disappointing two-over 73 in the first round of the Frys.com Open, Tiger Woods rallied to shoot a three-under 68 on Friday to get within the cutline. He wasn’t about to miss his second consecutive cut for the first time in his career. (That would’ve been embarrassing!)

Joey's first week with Tiger

After Tiger Woods finished his pro-am at CordeValle for the Frys.com Open on Wednesday afternoon, he spoke to the press. Surprise! — there were no surprises. I’d like to call it the Groundhog Day edition. Tiger says he’s healthier, more prepared than his last starts at WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and the PGA Championship, playing 36-45 holes a day, and refined his swing changes with instructor Sean Foley.

Here are highlights along with some asides:

Tiger: I mean, it can't get any worse, right?

Tiger Woods is making his fourth (or is it fifth? I’ve lost track) comeback to competitive golf this week at the Frys.com Open at CordeValle in northern California. It will be his first event since he shot 77-73 to miss the cut at the PGA Championship nearly two months ago.

Naturally, this Fall Series event held in what’s been dubbed as “silly season” has created a ton of buzz because these days, it seems like every time Tiger tees it up, it receives so much publicity that we almost treat it like a major! Have you seen the Golf Channel promos?? (Don’t blame ’em, I’d do the same thing if I were a GC exec.) I feel like we’re almost more intrigued with what Tiger does on the golf course since his fall from grace than we were pre-hydrant era. Which makes sense because it’s become just a tad more unpredictable.
