Tiger Woods about to hit a ball into Asia

Tiger Woods is playing in this week’s Turkish Airways Open, a European Tour “Finals” event, for a reported ~$2.4 million (1.5GBP). Part of the deal is getting involved in photographed stunts and sponsored outings, like hitting a ball from the famed Bosporous Bridge, which connects the west to the east.

Tiger in Turkey

Tiger Woods is returning to Turkey this fall, but it won’t be a high-stakes match play event like it was last year when he played in the Turkish Airlines World Golf Final. This time it will be a 78-man field called the Turkish Airlines Open and part of the European Tour Finals Series (their version of the FedExCup).

As I was unloading the notebook for my PGA Championship Hangover dissertation, I included this following item, but after an email exchange with the best in the biz, I realized it was far too funny (the actual tweets) to be so far too buried in my 5,000-word dossier (besides, most people probably fell asleep before getting to the fourth paragraph).

Besides, I enjoyed the below exchange of tweets between Luke Donald and ISM head honcho Chubby Chandler (whose stable includes Lee Westwood, Charl Schwartzel, Louis Oosthuizen, among others–oh, and formerly, Rory McIlroy) late Sunday night after the final round of the PGA Championship.

Rory will battle frenemie (or maybe it's just enemy now?) Westwood

The match-up that we were all hoping for is no longer just a possibility — it is indeed happening. Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood both won their quarterfinal matches, beating Sang-Moon Bae and Martin Laird, respectively.

Why are we calling this a “grudge” match? I mean, aren’t Rory and Westy like besties?

The glitterati of world golf may be assembled in Abu Dhabi, but India is the venue for what may – in the long-term – prove the most significant of the week’s fixtures. It’s there, playing in the Challenge Tour’s Gujarat Kensville Challenge, that Walker Cup star and world-beating amateur Peter Uihlein will make his professional debut.

Uihlein sets his sights toward Europe

College and amateur standout Peter Uihlein, the youngest son of Acushnet chief Wally Uihlein, announced Monday his intention to turn pro, instead of finishing his final semester at Oklahoma State University. Uihlein, who captured the 2010 U.S. Amateur at Chambers Bay and played on two Walker Cup teams, will kick off his career exclusively in Europe, playing on sponsor’s exemptions on the European Tour, along with its developmental Challenge Tour.

McIlroy looking for new horizon...

Rory McIlroy couldn’t believe the massive reaction to his recent split with now former agent Chubby Chandler and ISM. It’s not uncommon for players and managers to break up and usually no one notices. But since the 22-year-old won the U.S. Open by a decisive eight strokes and due to Chubby’s high profile, it was big news. (After all, in the new world order Rory breaking a nail might make headlines.)

Luuuuuke: FTW!

If for some reason you haven’t read this week’s SI Golf Group’s PGA Tour Confidential, do it now. We kicked around Luke Donald’s come-from-behind victory at the Disney, which also won him the PGA Tour money title and made him the frontrunner in the Player of the Year race.

We need to talk...

Chubby Chandler tells Golf Digest’s Tim Rosaforte that he was given the pink slip from Rory McIlroy during a layover in a lounge at JFK Airport in New York after they got off a plane from the PGA Grand Slam in Bermuda — Rory was headed to Istanbul via London to visit with tennis star girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki and Chubby was off to vacation in Dubai. Chubby also said he was “disappointed and a bit shocked” by the news:
