Harris English didn’t have his A-game on Saturday at Torrey Pines, but he managed to escape with a one-over 73 in the third round of the Farmers Insurance Open and still shares a spot atop of a packed leaderboard.

English, who led by two heading into the weekend, got off to a nice start, making a birdie on the first hole to extend his lead to three shots. However, on a day with tough conditions at Torrey’s South Course, he broke his streak of 39 holes with par or better on the par-4 6th. After driving it in the fairway bunker, he knocked his next shot short in the rough. His chip flew over the green and then he blew his putt to save par six feet past the hole before he missed the comeback for bogey and tapped it for a costly six.

Looks easy, right?

The Guardian has assembled an interactive guide to the five holes comprising arguably the most difficult closing stretch on the Open Championship rota.

Well worth your attention, it pairs snazzy graphics with the insight of several illustrious (and not so illustrious) competitors, Graeme McDowell, Steve Stricker and Jim Furyk among them.

Love grinds it out to qualify

Go low or go home — that’s what it boils down to in one-day qualifiers. Brian Davis of England fired a six-under 64 on Monday to best the field and secure one of eight spots at hand for the British Open at America’s International Final Qualifying event. Davis Love III was one of six Americans to qualify, posting a four-under 66 at Gleneagles Country Club in Plano, Texas.

Thunderstorms caused a five-hour delay, resulting in the decision by officials to shorten the event from 36 to 18 in order to finish on Monday.

Jason Kidd is an excellent human being, an incredible athlete and an even better golfer.

This week’s rules blunder is brought to you by Chad Campbell, who was disqualified from the Deutsche Bank Championship after forgetting to register. At every tournament, players are required to sign the application for the event — it’s an insurance thing and just a formality, like signing your scorecard, when they arrive on site (preferably before they play a practice round, but you’re only disqualified if you don’t register before you tee off).

By Stephanie Wei under Balls in the Air

Welcome to Balls in the Air, where I size up my Fantasy Golf picks of the week, featuring guys to watch (or not) and interesting story lines. Disclaimer: Don’t yell at me if my picks suck. There’s no mathematical formula to my attempt at predicting something as random as golf scores.

Remember last week when I said my friend doesn’t read “Balls in the Air” because he said “There’s no Stephanie in it”? Well, with the feedback I received, it wasn’t just me that thinks there’s a ton of Wei in these posts. And it makes me happy to know that Jerry Foltz (the friend) will now actually be reading every word I write. In fact, there will be a quiz on Thursday afternoon! So, study up!
