Rory_McIlroy_Fires_Caddie-1021x580

There were murmurs on Sunday during the Canadian Open that Rory McIlroy had split with his caddie of nine years J.P. Fitzgerald. Well, at least one Tour player had already learned of the news before teeing off in the final round. This relative unknown player shared the information with those in his group, which completely caught them off-guard. At first they thought it was a joke, so the player had to clarify that he was serious.

Rule no. 1: Believe none of what you hear and half of what you see. I’ve been around long enough to know that rumors fly around the Tour more than any other group of people I’ve ever encountered (and that says quite a bit, to be honest). The kind of BS that spreads doesn’t surprise me anymore, but it did when I first started covering the Tour (which feels like a lifetime ago now). Anyway, of course there is often some truth or even truth to things you “hear.” I feel like I have a decent amount of experience at this point to smell out what’s worth pursuing and what’s not. A lot of the time it’s just dumb gossip that you wouldn’t repeat because, well, it’s stupid. There are various factors to this super mathematical equation I’ve developed — 1) the source; and 2) the information.

On Tuesday a group of more than 80 caddies filed a class-action federal lawsuit against the PGA Tour, seeking compensation for being forced to wear bibs that are plastered with sponsored logos and serving as “human billboards.” Later that day, Commissioner Tim FInchem addressed the media and spoke about the issue. Then, during the Tour’s annual Player Meeting at Torrey Pines, the site of this week’s Farmers Insurance Open, he addressed the topic briefly.

Well, apparently, some of the comments made by Finchem and other Tour officials have been misleading and/or untrue. The lead attorney for the caddies, Gene Egdorf responded in a letter on Thursday that was distributed to PGA Tour pros, which stressed “the lawsuit filed by the caddies is NOT about or against the players nor does it involve your money.”

Kevin Na’s longtime caddie Kenny Harms is one of the lead complainants in the suit

More than 80 professional golf caddies have filed a class-action federal lawsuit in Northern California against the PGA Tour, seeking compensation for being forced to wear bibs emblazoned with sponsored logos. The caddies allege that the Tour is earning $50 million a year from the sponsors while they receive nothing in return for serving as “human billboards.”

Big shoes to fill!

Big shoes to fill!

With Stevie Williams’ announcing his semi-retirement following the 2013-14 PGA Tour season, Adam Scott is in search for a new full-time caddie. While it will be difficult to replace Williams, who worked with Scott for 3.5 years, Scott certainly has no shortage of applicants to choose from.

Generous Garrigus in caddies’ corner

Robert Garrigus is always giving back, even though it’s usually done behind the scenes and without a big shiny press release. He often picks up the food tab at the caddie trailer for the entire week. He’s thrown in a big-screen TV for the winner of the caddies’ closest-to-the-pin contest on Wednesday of The Players Championship. He’s paid the fees for the Caddies’ Tournament golf course, along with the $10K purse, the past several years.

This time, Garrigus, who earned a career-high $3.2 million in 2012, is taking it a step further and making things more official. He’s setting up a “Caddie Emergency Fund,” where PGA Tour caddies will have access to $100,000 for — yep, you guessed it — emergencies, and a scholarship foundation for caddies’ kids, which will probably be called Professional Tournament Caddie Association (PTCA) Foundation.

Rory McIlroy looks pensively at his yardage book <WTF>

As promised, here are yardage books for the U.S. Open at Olympic — complete with notes and mark-ups — courtesy of two very nice caddies (a few of the holes might not be completely finished, but good enough, right?). Pretty intense to watch them chart the holes and the greens. It’s A LOT of work, especially for the guys, who are incredibly comprehensive.

Enjoy!

Dustin and Bobby: It's not you, it's me.

Dustin Johnson and former looper Bobby Brown will be reunited in the third round of the Deutsche Bank Championship.

It’s not quite the former caddie-player pairing we’ve been longing to see since Tiger Woods and Steve Williams split up (which will transpire at the Australian Open in November, sources say), especially after Williams’ strong words for Woods after new boss Adam Scott captured the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
