Splitsville

Splitsville!

With the introduction of the wraparound schedule, it doesn’t really seem like a brand new season, but it is — the 2013-14 season kicks off with the Frys.com Open on Thursday, which is *crazy* because it feels like the 2013 season just ended the other day. Oh, wait, it kind of did.

Still, it’s that time of the year again, where players and caddies are breaking up and hooking up.

Players and caddies split all the time (and also get back together sometimes after a “break”). Imagine the start of the season, as well as certain periods throughout the year, when it’s “time for a change.” It’s like high school, where it’s not uncommon  that at some point one of your friends is going to date one of your exes and vice versa.  After all, it’s a limited pool you’re dealing with.

Joe dumps DJ for Tiger

As if there weren’t enough excitement and surprise in golf on Sunday — while Hunter Mahan and Bill Haas were locked in a duel at the Tour Championship, Butch Harmon revealed on Sky Sports that he had just spoken to his student Dustin Johnson, who told him caddie Joe LaCava decided to leave Johnson for Tiger Woods.

Oh, the good ol' days!

As you know, Dustin Johnson and Bobby Brown called it quits after working together for three years. It was an amicable split or “break” initially, according to their comments to the media. (It’s always easier to end things by calling it a “break” first, you know?) Sounds like things have worked out well for both DJ and Brown. DJ snagged one of the most-respected loopers in the game, Fred Couples’ longtime caddie Joe LaCava (who people say served as Freddie’s babysitter, too).

Brown says he was happy when he got a phone call from rookie Kyle Stanley, whom Brown had his eye on for the last few years. When Brown and Dustin split, he hoped to snag Stanley’s or Kevin Chappell’s bag. Brown and Stanley teamed up starting at the Colonial a few weeks ago.

Reunited!

I tell you — it’s not easy to keep up with the Caddie-Merry-Go-Round the last several weeks. One second this player has hired that caddie and then the next that caddie decides to go to another player. You see, wasn’t that confusing?

After Craig Connelly, aka “Wee Man,” was sacked by Martin Kaymer, he accepted a job with Francesco Molinari, who fired his looper Jorge Gamarra the same week. But then Paul Casey let go of Luke Donald’s brother Christian and offered the position to Connelly. Just a few days after agreeing to caddie for Molinari, Connelly showed up at Wentworth as Casey’s man.

Adam Scott parts ways with longtime looper Tony Navarro

Maybe it’s that time of the month or something’s in the water, but there have been an awful lot of player/caddie splits lately. Martin Kaymer won’t be the only pro with a different looper on his bag this week. Add Adam Scott, Camilo Villegas, Francesco Molinari and Boo Weekley to the conversation, among others.
