The PGA Championship felt like a slog-fest for most of the week (or, dare I say, a poor man’s U.S. Open?) — super slick and firm greens, thunderstorms, weather delays, slow play, ultra long (after more rain Friday and overnight) tough scoring conditions — but then the last groups made the turn at Quail Hollow on Sunday, and suddenly, the fireworks and the drama broke out.

At the end of the day, Justin Thomas separated himself from the pack, hitting some gutsy shots and stroking in key putts, along with a couple of moments that felt like divine intervention or tacit approval from the golf gods.

Maybe it’s the long day, lack of sleep and/or the humidity, but while there are so many things to talk about after the first round of the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, I’m a bit uninspired. Yet clearly I am inspired enough to wait for it to kick in at midnight and take the time to write this post when all I want to do is zone out to a new series on Netflix and pass out. But here we are.

The first round of the PGA Championship at the new and — well, um, arguably — “improved” Quail Hollow Club was relatively predictable, though everyone was curious to see how the PGA would set up the course and how it would play (before they spoke out too strongly on the changes and new holes, particularly the green at the par-3 4th). Overall, it was vintage Thursday at the PGA: Predictable.

And if you’ve already listened to the latest episode of the the WUP pod with Coach Mike Small and Kevin Na, then you know exactly what I mean. I’m clearly biased and this is yet another shameless attempt to plug my own “product,” but obviously, I highly recommend you SUBSCRIBE, download it and listen to it, like, ASAP, or now.

Splitsville

Splitsville!

With the introduction of the wraparound schedule, it doesn’t really seem like a brand new season, but it is — the 2013-14 season kicks off with the Frys.com Open on Thursday, which is *crazy* because it feels like the 2013 season just ended the other day. Oh, wait, it kind of did.

Still, it’s that time of the year again, where players and caddies are breaking up and hooking up.

Players and caddies split all the time (and also get back together sometimes after a “break”). Imagine the start of the season, as well as certain periods throughout the year, when it’s “time for a change.” It’s like high school, where it’s not uncommon  that at some point one of your friends is going to date one of your exes and vice versa.  After all, it’s a limited pool you’re dealing with.

Tiger eyes win at Bay Hill

First of all, what the heck is the “Dartboard”? It’s what was formerly known as the “Open Thread” — you know, where we toss out some talking points and you share your thoughts and/or observations on the day. So, Tiger is looking really, really good early in the final round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He’s in excellent position to win for the seventh time here.

Padraig Harrington: has St. Patrick's Day come early?

Play is underway in the first round of the Transitions Championship and, with the exception of a certain three-time major winner, players are struggling to make significant inroads against par.

Cauley clicking on Tour

Bud Cauley had the advantage of teeing off in the morning on a breezy day at Waialae Country Club, but somewhere late on the first nine, the wind picked up. He was frustrated with some of his wedge shots, but he posted a two-under 68 in the second round to follow his opening four-under 66.

It wasn’t one of his best rounds, but it kept him in contention. The rookie is six-under at the halfway point of the Sony Open, putting him in solid position at T7 and four shots behind leader Matt Every, who lit up Waialae on Friday.

Cauley has Tour card well in hand

21-year-old Bud Cauley has probably secured his PGA Tour card for 2012 and saved himself a trip to Q-School. Cauley became a Special Temporary Member last week and placed T15 at The McGladrey Classic to boost his earnings to $735,150 — which would make him equivalent to No. 112 on the Tour money list.

Pffftttt...Q-school, what?!?

Although Briny Baird and Bryce Molder battling it out for their first PGA Tour victory in a six-hole playoff was mildly entertaining, I walked away from the Frys.com Open the most impressed with 21-year-old Bud Cauley. Playing on a sponsor exemption this week, Cauley shot four rounds in the 60s to place solo third, his best finish in seven Tour starts.

Tiger in his comfort zone: sidelines at the Stanford/Colorado game

Tiger Woods is well into the final round of the Frys.com Open — you know, trying to get that W! Whoops, he really must have meant “W for weekend” in his Wednesday presser. Woods is seven shots back of leader Briny Baird.

By the way, I was cracking up at some of the comments in the last Tiger post (with all due respect to Baird): “Tiger is getting waxed by Briny Baird!” or “Forget Baird, he’s getting waxed by Roland Thatcher, too!” Yeah, I censored those a little, but you get the point.
