Stanley and Waldman, a bromance!

Wow — for the second week in a row, that was the first word I uttered, but this Sunday at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, I was shaking my head in awe and respect instead of shock and disbelief.

I think few doubted that Kyle Stanley, who quite possibly works harder than anyone else in the pro ranks (I mean, the kid makes Vijay Singh look lazy!), would break through with his first PGA Tour victory sooner rather than later (but sometimes these things can go either way — need I list examples?). After all, talent doesn’t just vanish. Neither does resilience, especially when you’re 24 years old.

Stanley coming to grips

Kyle Stanley made a smart decision and got in front of the story early in the week at the WM Phoenix Open, so he could move on and redirect his focus to the present. He agreed to face the press on Tuesday morning at TPC Scottsdale, and bravely answered the inevitable questions about his shocking collapse on the par-5 18th at Torrey Pines in the final round of the Farmers Insurance Open this past Sunday.

The 24-year-old from Gig Harbor, Washington, handled it like a pro, saying all the right things and staying dry-eyed, unlike Sunday when he understandably had trouble holding back emotions.

Stanley and Waldman: WTF just happened?

Wow — that was the first thing I blurted out, shaking my head in disbelief. Most of you also probably found it hard to find the right words to describe what we watched on the last hole in regulation at Torrey Pines in the final round of the Farmers Insurance Open.

I mean, did I really just see Kyle Stanley, who started the day with a five-shot lead and extended it to seven with 11 to play, make a triple-bogey on the relatively straightforward par-5 18th? Did he seriously take six shots after blasting his drive 300 yards down the middle of the fairway? Which then forced a mind-blowing playoff against Brandt Snedeker, who won on the second extra hole.

Camilo Villegas walking with caddie Brett Waldman during the PGA Championship

Camilo Villegas’ caddie Brett Waldman has decided to pursue his dream to play professionally and take up his Nationwide Tour card instead of looping for one of the PGA Tour’s premier players, according to the AP. In between globetrotting with Villegas this fall, Waldman managed to pass three stages of qualifying to make it to the final stage of Q-school earlier this month. He shot a six-round total three-under and placed T64 — not quite good enough to earn his PGA Tour card, but he walked away with full status on the NWT.

So here’s an intriguing Q-school story — Camilo Villegas’s caddie Brett Waldman juggled a hectic schedule looping for a premier player and getting to the final stage this fall. Intern Kevin has been on this beat since pre-qualifying and regularly providing WUP with enthusiastic updates on Waldman’s progress (which, unfortunately, I failed to publish–my bad). His journey is mighty impressive, especially considering he only took a month to prepare and globe-trotted with Villegas right before second stage.

Intern Kevin also posed an interesting question: If Waldman, who is clearly very talented, has a poor finish at finals and only earns conditional status on the Nationwide Tour, does he keep his well-paid gig with Camilo or chase his dream?
