Donald outlasted Westwood in a sudden-death play-off

Nearly five years ago, when Luke Donald first announced his ambition to one day sit atop the world rankings, he was roundly mocked as callow, presumptuous, even delusional. After all, this was a player whose only real brush with greatness, in the final group of the 2006 PGA Championship at Medinah, had left him looking thoroughly outclassed.

Reunited!

I tell you — it’s not easy to keep up with the Caddie-Merry-Go-Round the last several weeks. One second this player has hired that caddie and then the next that caddie decides to go to another player. You see, wasn’t that confusing?

After Craig Connelly, aka “Wee Man,” was sacked by Martin Kaymer, he accepted a job with Francesco Molinari, who fired his looper Jorge Gamarra the same week. But then Paul Casey let go of Luke Donald’s brother Christian and offered the position to Connelly. Just a few days after agreeing to caddie for Molinari, Connelly showed up at Wentworth as Casey’s man.

Schwartzel: the jacket fits!

With its flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship, taking place this week and all four current major champions present, the European Tour doled out awards to Charl Schwartzel and Martin Kaymer on Wednesday in Wentworth, England.

Competitors of the Ole Seve pro-am

Several top European golfers paid tribute to Seve Ballesteros by playing in a pro-am event to raise money for cancer charities. Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal, Colin Montgomerie, Graeme McDowell, Retief Goosen, Paul Casey, Justin Rose and Ross Fisher were among the competitors in the “Ole Seve” event at Wentworth, the site of this week’s BMW PGA Championship.
